Has Anyone Read "White Awake"? What Did You Think?

One of my former churches is beginning a series based on a book called "White Awake" by Daniel Hill. (https://www.ivpress.com/white-awake-ebook) The book is published by InterVarsity Press (IVP), a respected evangelical Christian publisher.

A blurb at the site contains the following:

Hill began a journey of understanding his own white identity. Today he is an active participant in addressing and confronting racial and systemic injustices. And in this compelling and timely book, he shows you the seven stages to expect on your own path to cultural awakening.

It's crucial to understand both personal and social realities in the areas of race, culture, and identity. This book will give you a new perspective on being white and also empower you to be an agent of reconciliation in our increasingly diverse and divided world.

TOPICS: Evangelical Christian; Religion & Culture
KEYWORDS: book; books; christianity; church; culture; ivp; race; white; whiteawake
Honestly, I'm not sure what to think of this book but it sounds like pop psychiatry feelgoodism. I may be white but, there are two other cultures I place above my racial identity. First, I'm a Christian and, therefore, my entire attitude towards race should mirror what has been taught in the Bible (Galatians 3:28). Secondly, I was raised in Texas and, even moreso than being an American, I reflect the values and spirit of a Texan, which includes that we respect our women and are kind and helpful to those in need rather than responding with crudeness or indifference one might encounter in other parts of the country. I see this attitude in Texans of all races - white, black and brown, as well as Asians.

My guess is that this book is a bow to multiculturalism which is a faulty premise that teaches all cultures are equally valid - a premise I strenuously object to. To say all cultures are equal is to say I am no different than the lowest form of behavior practiced by any of them. Some behaviors do not deserve a seat at the table, something even the multiculturalists practice even without preaching it.

In any case, I would like to know if any FReepers have read this book and what you thought of it. Is my instinct correct, or do I have this guy all wrong? Was this book recommended reading in your church?

Sadly, even in places of respected evangelical thought, we are seeing evidence of liberal dogma seeping in and unleashing their poison. I don't believe I need to "understand white culture" nor should it be the basis on which to apologize to any non-whites for it. My beliefs as a Texan tell me to approach everyone with hospitality and kindness (at least until I get the measure of them) and my beliefs as a Christian tell me I should behave this way regardless of race or gender. This is how I mark my life and I feel in unnecessary to bend my knee to anyone other than Christ Himself.

This was a church that spent a year preaching on topics of marriage and then acted surprised when many of the singles up and left, feeling they weren't being ministered to.

I will wonder what the reaction will be of the church's non-whites if a series on "white culture" is presented.

I do not feel the need for any cultural awakening. I think I know what “reconciliation” means within that context, and I wouldn’t be interested in that either.

I agree with you about the primacy of a Christian Identity. That’s all I need. People who talk about skin color are racists. The phrase “White Awake” totally turns me off.

I have not read the book but I really like what you said of your own beliefs. I try to always treat folks with respect.

Really? Reverse the race and see if it is still 'enlightening'? How about they reconcile to us? This is a bunch of psychobabble.

Praise God for this, not me. The move was actually more geographical. This church is a very large church in a very liberal college town (though not a "megachurch" - this is a 50-year-old church that grew mostly out of fealty to the Bible, not replacing it with liberalism).

God's journey took me to San Antonio and then outside the U.S. - I don't regret His leadership in this.

There is a Bible Study group I am quite fond of that still attends this church and I have had the pleasure of joining them through ZOOM during the virus lockdown. That's how I became aware of it. It's a good church but I do think sometimes they minister to the 80% of the body while ignoring the remainder.

Why do we NEVER confront black racism? People like to pretend this is a one-way problem, but everyone knows darn well it isn't. Racism among blacks against whites and Asians is rampant and often turns deadly. How about we talk about THAT for a change?

This article might give you a slightly different perspective. It certainly confirmed my feelings and said them better than I could.

“God Save Us From the Woke pastors.” It was in American Thinker. Sorry, I don’t know how to post articles to FR.

As with achieving “Clear” status (until the latest batch of Elron’s “lost” works are revealed), it will always cost “more”.

The eternal “N + 1”.

Back when whites were, effectively, the only people voting, then splitting us down the middle made sense.

But now our voting percentage is in the 60-70% range and dropping every year. So, if we split down the middle, and the Democrats grab most of the remaining 30 to 40%, guess who runs the country and gets to subjugate us?

Bottom line - many of you guys may not like the Republican Party for various (legitimate) reasons, but in THIS SYSTEM, trying to ‘teach the Republicans a lesson’ simply empowers the Democrats. So, maybe, think about it, a bit.

You’re confusing two separate pools. White vs non-white is separate from Republican vs Democrat. There are plenty of non-whites scurrying from the Democrat Party because they see the insanity of Democrat positions and want no part of it. Shall I consider you guilty of “black and white thinking”?

Just finished listening to a sermon by John MacArthur who pretty much sums up my feelings on the matter although in much better (and longer) context:
