[Catholic Caucus] Schönborn: Francis Wants to Abolish Celibacy, Uses Amazon Bishops As Pretext
Pope Francis considers abolishing celibacy, said Vienna Cardinal Christoph Schönborn to the Austrian Bishops' KathPress.at (October 2).
What the Amazon representatives will say during the [manipulated] Amazon Synod will be "decisive", according to Schönborn.
He admitted that regional regulations could have a global role model effect.

The Eastern Orthodox allow for married priests, and they are having trouble finding vocations. This shows that the challenge is secularized society, NOT celibacy.

Catholic Church already has married priests. Having more wouldn’t be a doctrinal change

I find it difficult to believe that Christ would want His vicars to be without the companionship of a wife for their entire lives. Of course He,Himself, was never married...but I'm not sure that He'd expect men who are *fully* human (born with Original Sin) to be exactly the same.
And unless I'm mistaken there are at least *some* married priests in England,Ireland,Canada and the US...most of them being converts from the Anglican Church.
Why only these few?

Celibacy in the priesthood is a choice by the Catholic church.
It is not a biblical requirement, though Paul thought it wise.
Paul believed elders in the church should be limited to one wife.

Celebacy was not required in the Roman church until recent history. No foundation in the bible.

And yes, being married to a priest would be rather different than being married to an accountant.

Only the example of Jesus and the counsel of Paul. That would seem to be enough.
Clerical celibacy was required by a local council in Spain, the Council of Elvira, back in the third century. It's not that recent.

"Celebacy was not required in the Roman church until recent history. No foundation in the bible." I know that people are sensitive to this issue, but Ive read the Holy Bible New Testament and I agree with you.

In this life the most honorable and pleasant way to pass through is to find a good spouse have a family be devoted to one another and keep those ties as they go through generations
The life of the seller bitch where those that devote their lives only to guide and try to never have the touch of another mom is a very difficult and hard road and in my view nearly impossible
What were saying here in this modern age is the truth of men in particular who have tried to go that route who are really just depressing Homo sexual desires and then taking those out on innocent young men

Not much detail in this article. I wonder what Schoenborn actually said.

The Oak Ridge Boys' song "Elvira" is not about the council.
Just to avoid any confusion.
It took a while before the rule was widely enforced. Gregory, bishop of Tours in the 6th century, had ancestors who had been bishops.

The best way to purge this is to allow Catholic Priests to marry and carry out normal sex lives as do their fellow humans. The problem with your simplistic view is that when you bring a second human being into your relationship with God, you are jeopardizing your own if the other person does not share the faith.
In other words, how do you propose we deal with divorced priests? Or the children of divorced priests? Or the possible future spouse of the ex-wife?
If you're not Catholic then you could care less, but as a practicing Catholic I would prefer not to open that can of worms.

Yup. Had them for roughly the first 1/2 of Church history.
The best argument against is actually made in the attached cartoon: the competing obligations to the Church and to one's family.
