Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit! Nathanael said to Him, How do You know me? Jesus answered and said to him, Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you. Nathanael answered Him, Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel (John 1:4749).
Of all the apostles, Nathanael had one of the more interesting first encounters with Jesus. After Philip told him he had found the MessiahJesus of Nazareth, the son of JosephNathanael was skeptical. His dubious reply, Can any good thing come out of Nazareth? reflects his incredulity that the Messiah could come from such an insignificant town. Yet he followed Philip.
As he approached, Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit! Jesus recognized that Nathanaels blunt, honest reply revealed his lack of duplicity and his willingness to examine Jesus claims for himself. Nathanael was an Israelite indeedhe was a genuine, true disciple from the beginning.
Taken aback by Jesus omniscient recognition of him, Nathanael was also surprised by Jesus supernatural knowledge of information known only to him. Not only did Jesus supernaturally see Nathanaels physical location, but He also saw into his heart (cf. Ps. 139:14).
Whatever happened under the fig tree, Jesus supernatural knowledge of it removed Nathanaels doubt. Overwhelmed, he acknowledged Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah.
Just thinkJesus knows you every bit as intimately as He knew Nathanael. The same acknowledgement of Christs deity ought to be on your lips as well.
Ask Yourself
Is Jesus intimate knowledge of you a source of fear and anxiety, or is it rather a source of comfort and security? If youre living in the first state of mind, try putting into words why anything that keeps you from the latter could possibly be worth it.

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and said of him, ‘Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!’ Nathanael said to Him, ‘How do You know me?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.’ Nathanael answered Him, ‘Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel’” (John 1:4749).
Jacob was a trickster, schemer, and liar. He deceived his father to steal his brother’s blessing. Jacob means supplanter and conveys the idea of these character defects. God corrected this character flaw in Jacob by leading him to his uncle Laban who tricked and deceived him in a similar way by switching daughters on him in marriage and also changing his wages repeatedly. Afterward God changed Jacob’s name to Israel and He appeared to him at the foot of Jacob’s ladder.
Nathaniel was not a Jacob. He was an Israelite, as Christ pointed out. Apparently, when Nathaniel was under the tree he was contemplating how God could pick dishonest Jacob and appear to him at Jacob’s ladder. Perhaps Nathaniel asked this of God, if God valued his honesty, and if God would reveal Himself the way He did to Jacob. Christ was the answer to Nathaniel’s prayer:
John 1:50-51 (NKJV)
Jesus answered and said to him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And He said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, hereafter you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Much like the 'noble' Bereans; who examined the Scriptures daily to see if what they were being told was so.
