Russia legalized abortion in 1955 and has the second-highest abortion rate in the world after China. While Russia’s anti-abortion movement has largely failed to change the law, it has gained momentum in recent years, spurred by the rise of the Orthodox Church as a powerful political force.
The head of Russia’s Orthodox Church has proposed a national ban on abortion to boost the country's lagging population numbers.
“We must first of all remove the topic of abortion to the extent that it exists,” Patriarch Kirill was quoted as saying at a pro-life event in Moscow on Sunday by Interfax.
With an estimated 1 million fewer abortions per year, he projected population numbers could reach 156 million in the next decade and 166 million in 20 years.
Russia has grappled with a demographic crisis in recent years, with its population declining for the first time in a decade last year to 146.8 million.

My question is why so many FReepers hate Russia...including the OP of this thread.
The root problem is not the availability of abortion, it is that too many women do not want children. Figure out how to fix that, and the availability of abortion becomes irrelevant.
We found out when visiting 10 years ago that the cities aren’t child-friendly. When you live in a high rise and take bhe subway, bus or trolley everywhere and have to go grocery shopping every day, it’s just hard. Families with more than one space them out several years. The people though were very warm toward our kids (ages 5, 8 and 10 at the time)in both Russia and Germany. I think they got a kick out of seeing little blonds and redheads.
He’s right. I read that under the Soviets, there were 9 abortions for every live birth...and this is not just a general statistic, but many women had actually had 9 or more abortions, as opposed to the few who hadn’t had any or “just” one or two. So that was the average. It was routine.
They’ve got to get their native population up and rebuild families in Russia.

I know things about Russia. Russia is shit. Your stupid feelings don’t trump my facts. We talked amicably about the great movie “The Death of Stalin”. Russia has banned this movie. Because they are shit.

Obviously there are some deep seated emotional issues that you’ve associated with Russia, and I’m just trying to understand where that bigotry comes from.
