US Supreme Court Hears Arguments on Removal of 92-Year-Old Peace Cross from Public Land

February 27, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – The United States Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments Wednesday on whether a World War I-era memorial in Maryland must be removed from public land on religious grounds, in a case that could have ramifications for countless disputes over benign religious imagery and the First Amendment.

The Peace Cross in Bladensburg is a 40-foot structure completed in 1925, which is “dedicated to the heroes of Prince George's County, Maryland who lost their lives in the Great War for the liberty of the world” according to an inscription on an accompanying tablet. The sides are inscribed with four words: “endurance,” “Valor,” “devotion,” and “courage.”

Its construction was privately funded, but because it sits on public land at the busy intersection of Annapolis Road and Baltimore Avenue, the American Humanist Association (AHA) launched a challenge in 2014, claiming the First Amendment forbids government support for faith-specific memorials.

“The Bladensburg cross sends a strong message of endorsement and exclusion—it appears that only Christian soldiers are worthy of veneration,” AHA claims. “It certainly does not honor the 3,500 Jewish soldiers who died in World War I and the countless other soldiers of all faith groups who have died in service since.”

The only reason these lawsuits happen is that if you prevail in a civil rights lawsuit like this is that if you prevail the plaintiff’s attorney gets paid all of their billable hours.

It’s a form of fundraising. They seek out things like this to file lawsuits about.

These people are mentally disturbed, why even take them seriously. The case should have been thrown out the first time a judge heard it.

they are not mentally disturbed. They have a very incisive agenda. And the lawyers find these lawsuits to make money.

As a last resort, it might be possible to use the case of the Mount Soledad cross as an example.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Soledad_Cross_lawsuits

Sell the land to a private organization that will preserve the cross.

First question:

“Are they still dead?”

Then the cross should remain.

(demonic bastards)

As much as the left screamed about Abortion re Gorsuch, this, this sort of case is the real reason they were willing to do anything to keep him off..

Returning to what the founders envisioned via religion and state and not the left wing idiotic communist nonsense of the last 50 or 60 years regarding religion and the state.

“It certainly does not honor the 3,500 Jewish soldiers who died in World War I and the countless other soldiers of all faith groups who have died in service since.”

The memorial was specifically for soldiers from Prince George’s County.

I’m from DC and grew up seeing the cross when we were in that part of the area. I can’t believe people just can’t leave stuff alone that doesn’t bother anybody, doesn’t bother them, and is part of the history of the area. I hope they are able to save it.

I read part of the transcript of the arguments.

Ginsberg (if she was even there and alive) sounded like an incoherent fool looking for an excuse to tear down the cross.

JUSTICE GINSBURG: Does it make any difference… the change from the founding, this was an almost overwhelmingly Christian country, but now we’re told that 30 percent of the U.S. population does not adhere to a Christian faith, does — does that change make any difference?

Kagan (a lesbian atheist) inexplicably said this:

JUSTICE KAGAN: I mean, it is the foremost symbol of Christianity, isn’t it? It invokes the central theological claim of Christianity, that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on the cross for humanity’s sins and that he rose from the dead. This is why Christians use crosses as a way to memorialize the dead. Is it because it connects to that central theological belief, isn’t that correct?

The lawyer arguing to keep the cross tried to argue it is secular (not it isn't), but also said this:

GENERAL WALL: So I’m not going to dispute that, obviously, it’s the preeminent symbol of Christianity….The question is whether it’s also taken on a secular meaning, because to say the cross has only that religious meaning I think would condemn every cross in the public sphere, including the ones that sit in Arlington, which even Respondents say we don’t have to take down.

They will rule 5-4 to take the cross down, and then the enemies of God will be tearing down every cross in this nation.

On the same theme are they going to remove all the Crosses and Stars of David from the gravesites of our military across Europe, especially France? Are they going to remove the Cross or Star of David from each and every headstone in the Arlington Cemetery? That is just the beginning.
EVERYBODY doesn’t have to be included in EVERYTHING. ESTABLISHING a RELIGION is selecting one and forbidding all others.
This is what the Wars of Religion were all about. The persecution of Protestants in France led to the mass exodus to the new world. Henry VIII made England Episcopalian. He established England’s religion where formerly it had been dominated by Catholicism.

How come no article ever mentions that the land the cross sits on was taken over by the city using eminent domain in the 1950s. The city knew the cross was on it should be forced to keep it there.

Very good point. First I have seen that mentioned. If the City wanted to have control over the Cross it should have been included in the Eminent Domain lawsuit.

Wait till someone figures out that most towns’ street layouts are orthogonal, and show “Crosses” on maps or satellite images.

This was, is and will be a Christian nations. We must instill Christianity in others by using our symbols on government property with no remorse or inhibition.

Just wow!
You know SkyPilot, let em’ take them all down. See what follows. IMHO, the Lord has already lifted up His Divine Hand of Protection from this wretched nation filled with evil, violence and hatred.

What follows after that will make these libs choke on their own vitriol. What is insane is that they think the status quo of normalcy will continue as it has since WWII was won. They’ve had peace, abundance, and freewill for 73 years.

There’s a Black Swan event coming up soon that will catch them off guard. What follows can’t even begin to be described, but it’ll be horrific. Day of the Lord and Judgement.
