20 years, 700 victims: Southern Baptist sexual abuse spreads as leaders resist reforms

Thirty-five years later, Debbie Vasquez's voice trembled as she described her trauma to a group of Southern Baptist leaders.

She was 14, she said, when she was first molested by her pastor in Sanger, a tiny prairie town an hour north of Dallas. It was the first of many assaults that Vasquez said destroyed her teenage years and, at 18, left her pregnant by the Southern Baptist pastor, a married man more than a dozen years older.

In June 2008, she paid her way to Indianapolis, where she and others asked leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention and its 47,000 churches to track sexual predators and take action against congregations that harbored or concealed abusers. Vasquez, by then in her 40s, implored them to consider prevention policies like those adopted by faiths that include the Catholic Church.

"Listen to what God has to say," she said, according to audio of the meeting, which she recorded. "... All that evil needs is for good to do nothing. ... Please help me and others that will be hurt."

Days later, Southern Baptist leaders rejected nearly every proposed reform.

The abusers haven't stopped. They've hurt hundreds more.

Tip of the iceberg. It's in all Christian religions.

I think we’re seeing the consequence of not only our age, but the extraordinary efforts Satan has been working on Christianity for a long time.

Judas betrayed Jesus with a kiss. Satan got ahold of at least 1/12th of the closest followers of Jesus.

"Tip of the iceberg. It's in all Christian religions."

And in Christian religions it's 1/10 or less than what it is in government schools and social services bureaucracies. When someone goes after a pervert in the local school, some foster home social services places a child in, or a social services bureaucrat, there's no large sum of money for lawyers to take a slice of. So, no one bothers.

Money says don't bother and Christ wants us to watch over the children. Is it Christ or cash that's worshiped in this country?

When you have an ecclesiastical structure it is much easier to hide abuse. All you do is simply move the pastor thousands of miles away and offer a quick payout with a nondisclosure agreement. However when you are a stand alone church there is no where to hide.

The trouble with “organized” religion is that it is run by people.

People SUCK!, (for the most part).

I know this might be an unpopular opinion but 50 allegations a year out of 15 million is surprisingly low given this day and age.

I don’t really think anybody on either side really cares about the abuse here or in the CC. This is simply the old story throughout history of how bigger mainstream society/cultures inevitably tend towards demonizing and pushing out smaller societies/cultures.

The Romans used to do it by lurid tales of how the Christians engaged in cannibalism. The medieval Christians authorities did it to fringe sects through lurid tales of sexual depravity. Now the modern day romans do it to the various christians sects, amish, sobap etc by the tried and true tactic of lurid tales of sexual depravity while they engage in much worse on a daily basis.

And consider the fact what the Romans engaged in themselves.

Its like the secular anything today pointing fingers at a church body and being hypocritically judgmental.

I mean the stagfering numbers of female and male public school teachers screwing underage and subordinate kids of the parents paying more and more for their salaries and pensions. No proportionate reaction, but this,...

Its more than that.

Church: a few ministers screw around with kids.

Dominant narrative in Public consciousness: Every accusation is automatically true! Give every accuser 10 million! Disband the entire church!

School: more teachers screw around with kids

Dominant narrative: Pay teachers more! Ban private schools! Everybody has to go to public education! Scandal? What scandal? (file scandal on page six of local section)

What a difference the media makes...

Sinfulness is common to all - but it does not uniformly manifest in some homogenized way.

Not all Christian groups have the same kind or degree of heresy or perversion.

The letters to the seven churches were not identical, but individual.

They do this also in significant part because there are an incredible number/percentage of women sexual predators using the young male population as their personal gratification toys.

The gynocentric media will never cover a female sex predator the same because they are set up to shield them. They are there to continue to push the false framing meme of “women good, men bad” anywhere and everywhere.

“It’s in all Christian religions.”

All religions. Not just Christian. In fact it is far worse in all other religions. Many condone such behavior.

Unfortunately, Satanists also target influential Christian groups for infiltration as well. Russ Dizdar, a former pastor for many years, has a ministry exposing Satanic groups who do these things, and helping victims.

Anywhere children are cared for there is a risk. This is why we must protect the institution of marriage and the family. The biological parents of a child are the most likely to care for their own children and keep them safe. Stable, married couples with strong references are the best candidates to adopt or be foster parents.

Churches, schools, and other groups that involve children need to adopt and strictly enforce policies of accountability for all who have children or even teenagers placed in their care. Situations where sex abuse is even possible should be avoided entirely. For example, adults should not be alone with children who are not their own. No private communications should be made either. Total transparency and accountability is mandatory.

Similar policies need to be in place for all who serve in Christian ministry even when dealing with adult relationships. For example, a male pastor should never counsel a female—even if she is an adult—alone. In fact, these days, with the danger of abuse or false allegations of abuse also including homosexual abuse, it is important to implement policies of accountability and transparency at all times.

Fact is when you think about it, just about every human being on earth is molested at some time or another. Nowadays the definition of “molested” has expanded to include a 16 year old trying to get to second base.

So she had an affair with a married man for 4 years.

During those 4 years she never had a chance to stop it.

Most likely regrets that he didn’t marry her.

Yep, I think that is generally the case. a man in his position is likely to attract 14 year old girls like a magnet, it takes a lot of willpowerto push them away.

“I know this might be an unpopular opinion but 50 allegations a year out of 15 million is surprisingly low given this day and age.”

Actually, it is 35 per year average. Probably a better average than Congress or any other group you want to divide out.

And it is probably true, but it is a distraction and a smear
