Improper registration is usually just a fine. It’s almost never a jail sentence.

I would have assumed that as well. Apparently swapped plates is considerably more serious than expired? And if the insurance situation isn't squared away that probably compounds it.
Probably the first thing a cop thinks when he runs plates that come back for a different car is "stolen car."

It’s not improper registration; it’s fictitious or fraudulent display of plates. And yes, I did get pulled over (you’d think for DWB if I were black*) and cited.
*He claimed I rolled through a stop sign.)
