Dangus, may the law be on your side since the swapping of license plates was the car dealer’s idea.
Prayers.
Lord Jesus Christ, grant Thy servant peace of mind, relief from the stress, protect him from all anxiety and resolve the legal situation in his favor.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, amen.
Prayers sent for a quick and simple resolution...and for health for your family.
Prayers up...
but all they can do is fine you, no jail time
He claimed I rolled through a stop sign

Well did you or not? That is his reason for stopping you
not the plates. That is until he checked them out. Since
you all hadn’t filed the necessary paper work the car you
were driving wasn’t registered to you.
Eventually you’ll get it all worked out and be okay. You
may have to pay a fine but that should be all.
Praying for you and your family. God bless!
Are you sure the guy even worked there? That he even owned the car he exchanged? Now sorry to be harsh- but how could you not have known that you need to get legal title and register the car in order to get legal plates? This is not something new or unique. Putting plates on a car that does not match those plates is a common act of car thieves. Which is why the law is rather frowny faced on this.
You will need a lawyer. You need to regain ownership of your own car and relinquish the other one. If there was a lien holder involved with either vehicle they will be informed. Same goes for the insurance companies. You don’t want to do this on your own. So find an attorney.
Be prepared to tell the court who this “young dealer” is.
I don’t see jail but the judge will need 100% of information you have.
I sense somehow there is more to your story/ I know it’s difficult to get it all out. It’s even more difficult to find someone who will listen, and yet more difficult to find some who will listen, be able to counsel you and lead you to peace and safety.
I will pray that you receive the help you need.
You may also have been victim of a variation of a common fraud called “curbstoning.” Unfortunately if buying a car from a private seller (or trading vehicles) it appears you do not have the same legal protection as when you are buying from a dealer. So that is another reason to contact a lawyer. To find out if the young man was acting as a private seller or as a dealer. Def let the dealership know of this behavior. How reputable is this dealership?
I do hope you get it straightened out.
Prayers for you and your family.
Prayers up, of course.
>> I don’t know what state you’re in, but before court it might be nice to have contacted your insurance company and see if they can get your new car linked to your old plates with the DMV. You have the signed title. <<
Oh, I had that all taken care of; it was only re-registering that I hadn’t done.
Dangus, I know -0- zero about the law, but that sounds way too severe. Clearly just an honest mistake on advice offered by someone you had a right to trust (who was wrong), with no harm done. I will pray because falling afoul of the law is terrifying. I will pray for your wife and the dear child depending on ou.
I will pray right now and tonight, and at Mass tomorrow.
You are a good friend and I hope this will be somehow an occasion of grace. Dear Lord, please send your angels to guard dangus and his dear ones.
Thank you all for your very kind prayers and concern.
A few years back, my Mom had a heart attack, with 80% blockage. Thanks to God, through the prayers of Freepers, she recovered to full health. You guys really are miracle workers.

I certainly thought it was an odd reason to pull me over. I was worried for my son who had been throwing up, so it’s plausible I did not come to a full and absolute complete stop. But I was going a two blocks down a very narrow service road with a zillion parked cars, so I’m quite certain I never topped 15 MPH, and that I slowed very considerably; I certainly did NOT “blow through” the stop sign as he alleged.
