No Mention of Apostolic Visitation After US Bishops’ Meeting with Pope

Senior US bishops thanked the Pope for meeting them, but declined to go into details on what was discussed

The leaders of the US bishops’ conference had a “lengthy, fruitful and good exchange” with Pope Francis during their meeting today, but have not mentioned any details about what was discussed or whether any concrete measures were taken or promised.

Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, met the Pope at the Vatican along with Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston – who also serves as President of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors – Conference Vice-President Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, and Secretary General Mgr Brian Bransfield, General Secretary of the conference.

The bishops said in a statement that they share with the Pope how the Church in the US has been “lacerated by the evil of sexual abuse”. “He listened very deeply from the heart,” they added.

“We look forward to actively continuing our discernment together, identifying the most effective next steps,” the statement continued.

Cardinal DiNardo originally announced that he was requesting a meeting with Pope Francis last month. The request followed the release of the Pennsylvania grand jury report on sexual abuse cases in six Pennsylvania dioceses and the announcement of credible allegations of child sexual abuse committed by Archbishop Theodore McCarrick, the former cardinal-archbishop of Washington.

Two dioceses also had announced allegations of inappropriate contact between Archbishop McCarrick and seminarians, resulting in settlements totalling more than $100,000.

Bergoglio has no intention of—no, is strongly opposed to—interfering with the Lavender Mafia in any way.

“He listened very deeply from the heart,” they added.

Yeah, I'll bet he did -- only to try to figure how to get himself out of this mess.

Heart, my patoot.

It’s not like it was their money. It’s came from suckers who fill their collection plates every Sunday.

If Pope “Who am I to judge?” ordered an Apostolic Visitation, he’d send Judas.

That is what the bishops don’t seem to get.

The bishops have used the laity’s donations to fund a lifestyle often filled with material extravagance and sexual license.

I am not lacerated. I am repulsed.

We sort of nailed the whole business of ‘virtue signaling’ - the idea of doing some philanthropy not because of an interest of benefiting people, but in making a political statement.

There needs to be a term for the type of speech used by religious institutions who use certain words and turns of phrase in order to say basically nothing.

‘Discernment’ is one of those words. Every time I see it in print, or used in speech, I know that something bad is going to get papered over somewhere by some cleric.

The English Language is a powerful thing. We’ve captured so many horrible things in very tiny capsules. ‘Musak’ is an example. I don’t have to explain it - the word conveys so much more than a pile of words can.

Now there has to be a word to capture the oblivia that pours forth from churches, church boards, magisterium, circles, covens, murders, packs, and herds that run churches.

‘Discernment’, ‘Listened deeply from the heart’, excuse me, but now I have to see much lunch again today.

How about this - “He was forcing kids to have sex with him. We turned him in to the police. We found out his bosses knew and covered it up. We called the police and they took them away too. Trust is broken, but we acted. No church is immune, because church is for sinners, and all have sinned. Children, however, require protection, and the church as a body demands and expects that protection for its children.

If you see something say something.

Now we have to figure out how to forgive these reprehensible, wretched organisms who did this. Somehow and someday we have to forgive, but we are not required to forget.”

The most important thing is to rid the clergy of all homosexuals. That will also take out most heretics.

Exactly.

I think the Catholic Church may also have to get real about married clergy.

Paul was right - being married and doing God’s work as a priest are two full time jobs, and if you’re a priest, you probably shouldn’t be a husband.

However . . .

There is no easy answer to the question, except of course that homosexuality and the priesthood should have nothing to do with one another.

I agree with that.

The problem is not celibacy; the problem is same-sex attraction disorder.
