The first Ely Pride Festival will be held this weekend (August 11).
Ely Cathedral will fly the rainbow flag for the first time this year to mark the start of the city's new Pride Festival.
Pride in Ely aims to celebrate people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, sexuality or gender. The rainbow flag will fly from the cathedral tower from Friday afternoon (August 10) ahead of the event on Saturday (August 11).
The dean of the cathedral, the Very Reverend Mark Bonney, said: "I am pleased to lend my backing to this community event because it celebrates the breadth and diversity of the community in which we all live.
"I am also very conscious that Christians have not always been perceived as being very supportive and inclusive as some of us would wish, and so I am pleased to fly this flag as a sign of the kind of inclusion that I wish to promote at the cathedral."
Fritha Love, one of the organisers of Pride in Ely, said she was "completely overwhelmed" by the decision, and believes it reflects Ely's spirit of acceptance.
"This is a massive and very visible show of support from the cathedral," she said.

Just begging God to zot them.
Ely, the home town of Oliver Cromwell, the famous Puritan leader who ruled England, Scotland, and Ireland as Lord Protector, beginning a few years after Charles I’s head fell. For all of Cromwell’s political faults (militarily he had a record second to none) he would have come up with a severe solution to this degeneracy.
Just sad.
A flag that expresses the exclusion of God.
The rainbow flag belongs to Jesus, and is also the sign of God’s grace after the Flood.
For someone else to try and appropriate it for an anti-Christian cause, is perverting its meaning.
Took the train out to Ely from London. They call the church the “ship of the fens”. Hell of a view across the flats.
is there any abomination that the Anglican/Episcopal “church” has YET to embrace?
just curious
Gallup reported in 2015 that 3.8 percent of Americans identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. That percentage seems to be rather consistent with research I’ve read on this topic...3 to 4% of the population, then, seems to ‘bully’ their way over the remaining 96-97%...rather strange.
They don't believe in sexual sin of any sort, do they.
The Very Reverend is not very scriptural. Churches can accept gay people as welcomed but to promote the sinful gay agenda from the cathedral is a heretic move against the faith. Jesus came to save sinners, not have their wayward lifestyles promoted.
Ah, ok.
I do agree that they’re using it in an un-Christian manner.
Visited Ely Cathedral several times when my dad was stationed at RAF Mildenhall with the U.S. Navy in the mid 1960s.
It is a magnificent Cathedral in what is actually a rather very small city.
Bump
oh those crazy Protestants....
St Audrey (Etheldreda), pray for us!
