[Catholic Caucus] Faith Under Fire: Remembering Heroic Catholic Chaplains
National Catholic Register ^ | May 28, 2018 | Joseph Pronechen

Acts of valor. Supernatural faith in the face of death.

Five Catholic chaplains have received the nation’s highest military award — the Medal of Honor. Two of them also have their causes for sainthood underway.

As Memorial Day is solemnly marked across the United States May 28, the Register remembers these heroic chaplains, recalling their remarkable bravery and their courageous response to the needs of their fellow men in war.

Father Joseph O’Callahan was the first Catholic chaplain to receive the Medal of Honor. His friends couldn’t imagine this Jesuit, head of the math department at Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts, who suffered from claustrophobia and nearsightedness, would become a Navy chaplain during World War II, let alone receive such an honor.

Good stuff as usual Ebb, thanks.

Recently met a young man, a Navy E-2 pilot who in a round about way gave me an Adam Makos book titled Devotion, I just finished it this morning.

We're so blessed to have all these things we know register in that old noggin. God Bless the USA. God Bless our veterans, and God Bless anyone or anything that happens to get in the way.

It pains me to admit there is probably little hope for some who've swallowed whole the Blame America First crap sandwich some of my family debated with me last night.

The cause of 9/11 is far beyond the old "truther" GWBush flew all the planes personally. No. They believe we attacked first and 19 hijackers reacted in about 2 weeks. Totally justified retaliation for 15,000 civilians the US had just killed in Afghanistan. Makes me sick.

I don't think even Al Qaeda or Isis believes that.

Good to see Emil Kapaun honored. He presented the Gospel to the very end, even to his captors, thus following the example set by Saint Paul.
And when he arrived Home, no doubt that the first words he heard were “Well done, My good and faithful servant.”

No I haven’t. Much of what I know about Fr. Kapaun I have read elsewhere, including here on Free Republic.
