Arise, O Lord; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble. Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt not require it. Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the fatherless. Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness till thou find none. The Lord is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his land. Lord, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear: To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no more oppress.(Psalm 10:12-18)

The Psalm begins with a question, a complaint to God , “Why do you stand so far off in the time of tribulation?”.

The Wicked One seems to be able to do what he pleases, He doesn’t fear God, thus He persecutes ‘the poor’, i.e. those on earth who are set apart for God, and utterly dependent upon him, having no other recourse but God himself. They are the object of hatred and scorn in this world, because of the faith which they will not let go of, in spite of the affliction they are forced to undergo by the forces of the wicked one.

To the poor, it seems that God is far away.

The Wicked One also has no sense of God. He is like the judge in Jesus’ parable who ‘feared not God nor regarded men’. This tyrant thinks there will be no day of judgment. Because of this vain Imagination, there is nothing morally or spiritually to inhibit his oppression, he does as he pleases in the earth. He thinks He is a’god’.

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.(2 Thess 2:3-4)

But the true and living God doesn’t really stand far off, He sees all of the ‘mischief and spite’ of wicked and godless men. There will definitely be a reckoning at His mighty hand.

So the Psalmist pleads on behalf of the poor, that God arise and lift up his hand, (the Messiah), and remember (that is personally regard and attend to) ‘the humble’.

This is a prayer for Divine intervention. God shall completely ‘break the arm of the wicked and evil man’, anti-Christ’s power will be shattered, his wickedness shall be thoroughly judged.

The vision involves the land also, for the final conflict is called ‘the controversy of Zion’. In the day of the answer to this prayer, the heathen (Nations) shall perish out of the Land. The Kings of the earth and their rulers had contrasted the ownership of the land God gave to the seed of Abraham,Isaac and Jacob, dividing the land at the U.N. and allotting portions of it to the ‘palestinian people’ and isolating and pressuring Israel to give concession after concession to Muslims who hate their very existence.

The nations will perish out of the Land of Israel.

This promise is verified in many other places in Psalms such as in Psalm 37,

For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the Lord, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.(Psalm 37:9-11)

The idolatrous World once wondered at the power and personality of ‘the wicked One’ and even worshipped him, singing “Who is like the Beast? Who is able to make war with Him?”

But God will show him to be but a ‘man of the earth’ and not a ‘god’, in the day when He comes to judge the humble and the oppressed in the glory of His power and in the majesty of his strength.

The LORD knows and regards the desire of the meek, and uses all of their sufferings in this world as a preparation of their heart, He is fitting us for something better. The LORD is teaching our ears to listen to a higher and purer voice, which is above the din and propaganda of this world.
