The Church offers people 'the soothing remedy of prayer, almsgiving and fasting' during Lent, the Pope said
Catholics should use the season of Lent to look for signs and symptoms of being under the spell of false prophets and of living with cold, selfish and hateful hearts, Pope Francis said.
Together with the often bitter medicine of the truth, the Church as mother and teacher offers people the soothing remedy of prayer, almsgiving and fasting, the Pope said in his message for Lent, which begins on February 14 for Latin-rite Catholics.
The Pope also invited all non-Catholics who are disturbed by the increasing injustice, inertia and indifference in the world, to join us then in raising our plea to God in fasting and in offering whatever you can to our brothers and sisters in need.
The Popes Lenten message, which was released at the Vatican on February 6, looked at Jesuss apocalyptic discourse to the disciples on the Mount of Olives, warning them of the many signs and calamities that will signal the end of time and the coming of the son of man.

Oh, look! There’s one now.
Is Lent mentioned in the Bible?
Irony personified.
These swindlers, in peddling things that have no real value, rob people of all that is most precious: dignity, freedom and the ability to love, the message said.”
Tell the Pope we are 23 Trillion in dent, 110 Trillion in unfunded mandates and to give us the papacy coin. Im tired of giving.
Lent is the term used to quantify the days leading to the Passion of Jesus which should be in the hearts of all Christians.

We don’t need lent to note who the false prophets are sir
While “Lent,” as we in the Anglo-Saxon world call it, is not named as such in the bible, it represents the 40 days of penance that is mentioned multiple times in both the New and Old Testaments, such as follows:
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word “lencten,” which means “spring.” The forty days represents the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to begin his ministry.
Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for the coming of Easter. It is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, Christians focus on their relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of themselves for others.
Sundays in Lent are not counted in the forty days because each Sunday represents a “mini-Easter” and the reverent spirit of Lent is tempered with joyful anticipation of the Resurrection.
There is a strong Biblical foundation for observing a 40 day period of penance and/or anticipation. The Scriptures are full of the significance, perhaps known only to God, of the number 40.
In the Old Testament, God punished mankind by sending a flood over the earth for 40 days and nights. The people of Nineveh repented of their sins with 40 days of fasting. The Prophet Ezekiel lay on his right side for 40 days as a precursor to the siege and destruction of Jerusalem. The Prophet Elijah fasted and prayed for 40 days on Mount Horeb. Moses fasted 40 days and nights while on Mount Sinai. Moses and the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 penitential years until they entered the Promised Land.
In the New Testament, the Lord fasted for 40 days and nights in preparation for the beginning of His public ministry.
