Pope Francis accused victims of Chile’s most notorious pedophile of slander Thursday, an astonishing end to a visit meant to help heal the wounds of a sex abuse scandal that has cost the Catholic Church its credibility in the country.

Francis said that until he sees proof that Bishop Juan Barros was complicit in covering up the sex crimes of the Rev. Fernando Karadima, such accusations against Barros are “all calumny.”

“As if I could have taken a selfie or a photo while Karadima abused me and others and Juan Barros stood by watching it all,” tweeted Barros’ most vocal accuser, Juan Carlos Cruz. “These people are truly crazy, and the pontiff talks about atonement to the victims. Nothing has changed, and his plea for forgiveness is empty.”

Didn’t Francis commit a calumny against the victims by his statement?

I don’t remember any pontiff speaking like this. His whole pontificate has been a confusing hash of leftist politics and very, very little spiritual guidance beyond contradictory statements.

He’s not a drooling, South American marxist; he’s a caricature of a drooling South American marxist.

False-prophet forerunner of the Antichrist.

I'm no fan of the Antipope, but this one is agitprop and BS.

If you actually read the article, you'll see that he defended someone who has stated that he didn't know his old mentor was a pedophile and perv. The pedophile was caught and punished. Pope Frannie didn't make any such statement regarding the pedophile's accusers.

To the fake news media of Latin America, those two separate things are the same thing. Must be Democrats.

Did you read the article? The pope calumniated the victim.

“As if I could have taken a selfie or a photo while Karadima abused me and others and Juan Barros stood by watching it all,” tweeted Barros’ most vocal accuser, Juan Carlos Cruz.

And the Church never acted internally until the victims finally resorted to go public.

Karadima’s victims reported to church authorities as early as 2002 that he would kiss and fondle them in the swank Santiago parish he ran, but officials refused to believe them.

Only when the victims went public with their accusations in 2010 did the Vatican launch an investigation that led to Karadima being removed from ministry.

P.S. In 1984 a group of parishioners reported to archbishop, Juan Francisco Fresno, later cardinal, about Father Karadima's "improper conduct." The letter was "torn up and thrown away," according to a court statement by the parishioner. In those days, Karadima had managed to install one of his own as the Cardinal's secretary. This priest was Juan Barros Madrid.

He's not the false prophet, he IS the anti/"in place of" Christ.

MudHamhead is the false prophet.

I did read the article. The Pope didn’t defend Karadima. One victim (now lives in the US, works for Dupont, sez here) believes that Barros saw one incident and did nothing, but that’s not unusual — predators gain such control over their victims that the victims believe everyone in proximity is also in on it or somehow under the predator’s control.

That’s how pimps maintain control over young prostitutes, who obviously are apparently free as birds and not within sight or easy reach, yet always return. That is one reason pimps prefer exploitation of teens.

Karadima was convicted, Barros was cleared.

The protesters against the Pope are actually mostly made up of Mapuche tribe, uh, activists, who vandalized churches (including some Protestant evangelical churches). The Pope received death threats. A leftist group against mortgage lenders (gee, I wonder who they mean?) also organized a small riot against his visit.
