Proverb 7 (NKJV)

The Wiles of a Harlot

01 My son, keep my words,
00 And treasure my commands within you.
02 Keep my commands and live,
00 And my law as the apple of your eye.
03 Bind them on your fingers;
00 Write them on the tablet of your heart.
04 Say to wisdom, "You are my sister,";
00 And call understanding your nearest kin,
05 That they may keep you from the immoral woman,
00 From the seductress who flatters with her words.

The Crafty Harlot

06 For at the window of my house
00 I looked through my lattice,
07 And saw among the simple,
00 I perceived among the youths,
00 A young man devoid of understanding,
08 Passing along the street near her corner;
00 And he took the path to her house
09 In the twilight, in the evening,
00 In the black and dark night.

10 And there a woman met him,
00 With the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart.
11 She was loud and rebellious,
00 Her feet would not stay at home.
12 At times she was outside, at times in the open square,
00 Lurking at every corner.
13 So she caught him and kissed him;
00 With an impudent face she said to him:
14 "I have peace offerings with me;
00 Today I have paid my vows.
15 So I came out to meet you,
00 Diligently to seek your face,
00 And I have found you.
16 I have spread my bed with tapestry,
00 Colored coverings of Egyptian linen.
17 I have perfumed my bed
00 With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Come, let us take our fill of love until morning;
00 Let us delight ourselves with love.
19 For my husband is not at home;
00 He has gone on a long journey;
20 He has taken a bag of money with him,
00 And will come home on the appointed day.";

21 With her enticing speech she caused him to yield,
00 With her flattering lips she seduced him.
22 Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter,
00 Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks,
23 Till an arrow struck his liver.
00 As a bird hastens to the snare,
00 He did not know it would cost his life.

24 Now therefore, listen to me, my children;
00 Pay attention to the words of my mouth:
25 Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways,
00 Do not stray into her paths;
26 For she has cast down many wounded,
00 And all who were slain by her were strong men.
27 Her house is the way to hell,
00 Descending to the chambers of death.

We should not merely know His Word with head knowledge, but we should have heart knowledge of it. It should travel down past our eyes and ears and get sown down into the soil of our heart; where it can bring forth the harvest that God intends for it to bring in our lives. We must not read God’s Word as just some other book, but rather as God’s book of life, as His instructions to live by, as His roadmap for success, fulfillment, godliness, and virtue.

Solomon says, “Keep my commandments, and live.” Yes, if we do our part, if we keep His commands, if we nurture them in the soil of our heart, if we apply them to every facet of our being, then we will LIVE, we will have the LIFE God intends for us to have. There are many humans on the planet today that are simply existing, but they are not LIVING. They are not enjoying the life Jesus died to give them. Jesus came that we might have and enjoy life, in abundance, to the full, ‘till it overflows John 10:10 .

He wants us to enjoy a vibrant, fulfilling and rewarding life. To do this, we must walk in accordance with His instruction. The text says that we are to keep His law (His Word) as the apple of our eye. The Treasury of Scripture Knowledge commentary says of this:
“As the pupil of the eye, the hole or the opening of the uveous coat, or iris, through which the rays of light pass, and falling upon the retina, there depict every object in its natural color, as upon a piece of white paper. Now the pupil of the eye being essentially necessary to sight, and easily injured, it is not only, in common with the other parts, deeply entrenched in the skull, ramparted with the forehead and cheek bones, defended by the eyebrows, eyelids, and eyelashes, and placed so as to be best protected by the hands, but, by a wonderful mechanism, is contracted or dilated by the muscular power of the iris, without which an excess of light would cause instant blindness.”
Just as we protect our eyes, so that we can see, we must protect God’s Word in our lives, so that we can LIVE! Jesus said;
“It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Matthew 4:4
We are called to live our lives by God’s Word. We are commanded to protect His Word in our heart. We are instructed to apply it to every area of our lives. We are urged to live it out by Faith! Why? Because God wants us to have and enjoy life – the God type of life – His best life for us NOW!

So what does this mean to you today? It means that God wants His best to be manifested in your life daily. He has given you a roadmap for life and that roadmap is His Word. Just as you protect your natural eyes, because they give you sight for living, you must protect His Word in your heart, because it gives you INSIGHT for living! Keep His Word and live. Apply His Word and enjoy the abundant life God has destined, designed, and desired for you!
