Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Meditating Upon The Names and Attributes of God



"Buckler"

"Buckler"

I always counsel my guitar students to invest in a strap for their guitar. That way, they do not have to support the guitar with their hands, and are free to use both hands to make music. They become MUCH better guitarists that way. This little fact goes well with Today's Name.

Some of the Descriptive Names For God Appear Only Once.

Some Appear Many Times. "Buckler" in mentioned at least Four.

A "Buckler" is a Small, Personal Shield that Buckles onto the Arm or Wrist, thus freeing Both Hands to do Battle. It is Especially Helpful in the Face-to-Face, Hand-to-Hand Combat of the Ancient World. This is a Wonderful Name for God, as It Tells us of His Individual and Personal Protection. It ALSO implies that He FREES BOTH OF OUR HANDS to do Battle, as He protects us by being "Buckled On".

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Although my favorite thing to make for dinner is "RESERVATIONS" I was delighted to see a beautiful new gas stove in the little mobile home I bought last year. I noticed that the stove was not hooked up to the City gas lines, but was instead, hooked up to a propane tank outside. I called the local propane company (let's call them "Oscar") to fill the tank and turn things on.

The man from Oscar showed up promptly and said "This is an illegal connection. This is for an outdoor grill! You need to have copper tubing installed through the walls and a proper tank that has a meter. This is a BIG FIRE HAZARD."

"Can you fix it for me?" I asked.

"Sure. I can get a crew in here next week. Till then, DON'T USE THE STOVE."

The following week the crew came, pulled out the stove, drilled through the wall of my mobile home, and installed the proper tubing. Then they installed the new tank, put everything back together, and turned on the stove. Suddenly, the flames shot straight up, like a WW2 Flame Thrower.

"Ooops, says Oscar,"This stove has orifices for NATURAL GAS. You need a stove with orifices for PROPANE."

"What's the difference? Do I have to get a new stove"

"No", says Oscar. "The kit with the Propane Orifices should have come with the stove. I'll change 'em right now if you got 'em."

Well, of course I didn't have any such thing, so Oscar said I could call the Manufacturer and get the parts, and then he would install them for me. Meanwhile, the bill for today's work came to $650.

The following day I went online with the make, model and serial number of the stove to find the parts. After perusing dozens of sites, I couldn't find it, so I called the manufacturer, and finally got a human and explained my problem.

"Well, we got the parts" said the human, "But we WON'T sell them to YOU!"

"Why not?"

"Because you are not a licensed plumber!"

So then I called "Oscar" back and they said they would NOT order the parts because they didn't "do that".

So then I called "Joe The Plumber" in our area, and they said they would attempt to buy the part, and do the job (which, of course meant a new vendor and a new bill!) Finally I thought I got the ball rolling.

Joe the Plumber called me the next day and said that the Manufacturer refused to sell him the part because "he was not the homeowner". However, he did give me the part numbers and told me to just call, and without explanation, order the parts. So that is what I did. Three days and $90 later, the parts came in a little envelope. There were four little brass rings that were the same size (for the burners) and two slightly larger ones (for the oven). Joe came the next day and installed them, fixed my shower head, and tightened up my bathroom faucet. All for $350.

Two weeks later, I happened to be cleaning out the closet next to the furnace, and a little envelope fell off a shelf. It was the packet of the ORIGINAL Propane Orifices that came with the stove.

Now, why am I telling you this Totally True Tale that sounds like it came out of "Atlas Shrugged"? Look at the definition of Today's Name for Our God. The Buckler is a very little shield that is worn over the hand. It seems so insignificant that even the Translators use the generic word "Shield" to describe it. But it is a very SPECIAL kind of shield because it frees both hands for Battle. It's like the tiny orifices in the Stove...the bigger molecules of Natural Gas, require a larger opening, and let too much Propane through, creating a conflagration. The moral of this story is...Even the LITTLE things matter!

I’m laughing - I know you don’t mind. Murphy’s Law in action. Reminds me of your story about throwing the scatter rug over a floor vent because you tripped on it and stubbed your toe!!!

Hey - it proves you’re human just like the rest of us but a lot of us would avoid telling people about our mistakes.

Did you get the snowfall that the NE got? I enjoyed what we got here in GA....loved it except it was so wet and heavy, it crushed a lot of plants and I had to get out and rescue them before the branches broke.. Do not want to lose my azaleas.

I certainly don’t mind your laughing! The things that happen to me happen to us all, but the LORD has given me a little gift to be able to share these things and relate them to the very things we are studying! I am forever grateful to HIM that I am given these little spurts of inspiration every morning as I sit and compose the thread...I do them in “real time” with very little editing (mostly grammar and spelling!).

We got about 4” of heavy wet snow, which turned to ice, and is now melting. I know snow is essential to avoid drought, but I loathe it. Seriously.

We are so grateful that you yourself have continued to move the ball down YOUR court ...to achieve your will and purposes for Israel and the world....as we rejoice that the Ultimate outcome will be for YOUR glory and honor before all nations.

I think the Lord allows these things to happen to me so I won't run out of stories for this thread. LOL! (Or to quote Xena The Warrior Princess, which she lifted from Conan the Barbarian, which he lifted from Nietzsche, "That which does not kill me only makes me stronger". LOL.

Not that I would wish evil on anyone, but the Bible is quite specific about that kind of thing. Especially when perpetrated upon penniless widows!

If people knew what they were doing, they would never take advantage of anyone.

When people are young and dumb, it’s easy for them to take advantage of others and not think anything of it.

At some point, though, as age progresses, there should come an awareness that “you can’t take it with you”. The only thing that counts it what is in the soul. Better to “check out” with a good soul, because nothing else matters.

It all balances out and God holds the final tally sheet.
