Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

"Hey, M.L.!" said Dad, "There is a really SWELL Picture playing at the Rialto tonight! You're gonna LOVE it!"

Well, I was always eager to go to the movies with Dad, and if he said it was a "Swell Picture", it probably was. So Dad and I went on a date to the old 30's-Era theater on Rozzie Squayah (Roslindale Square to non-Bostonians) to see The Ten Commandments.

At first, I didn't know what to think about this movie. Some old guy (Cecil B. DeMille) comes out in front of fake curtain to TELL me what the movie is going to be about...what was with that?

But then...Oh My Goodness! From the first scenes to the last line (Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout the Land!) I was riveted to the screen.

The biggest scene was of course, The Parting of the Red Sea. For years the public wondered how on earth Cecil B. DeMille was able to produce that effect. Years later it was revealed that the SFX guys added a large quantity of jello to the water and then reversed the film to get the "Parting". What we saw was actually the "Closing" played backwards. Subsequent remakes using CGI can't produce the Wonder that was felt by people upon first seeing the DeMille Classic. Past of the sense of Wonder comes from thinking, "How Did he Do That?".

Now...imagine that sense of wonder upon seeing this particular movie for the first time, and try to transpose it into what the People of Israel must have felt actually being in the MIDDLE of it! It is almost too much to imagine, and it is from things like this we can see that God is TRULY

The Mighty One Of Israel

I distinctly remember viewing when it first came out with my Mother & siblings at a drive-in theatre. My Dad worked away. We were spellbound.

Isn't it just the craziest thing, for Michelangelo to know exactly what Moses looked like? ;)

That's the best part about the film, lol. Wonder what happened to the horns though.
