Just for clarification the celibacy for all priests was demanded by the laity and implemented during the 11th Century. Diocesan priests take an oath to follow the rules around marriage and sex not specifically celibacy. Priests who are part of religious order, for example, the Francisans, take an explicit oath of celibacy. Whatever Rome decides it will only affect the secular clergy.

Good outta you, pope Franky!

Don’t let 2,000 years of history stand in the way of vast, reckless, change! What could go wrong?

Gotta hand it to him, this weekend I was considering if it had been long enough since his last outrageous act, that I could return to Mass, but just like every time I get to that point, his evil and idiocy rear it’s ugly head.

The true history of celibacy

The debate on married priests is damaged by myth-making. History shows that married men, if ordained, had to live continently

Just for clarification, this is not true. Celibacy, or more precisely continence, has been the rule in the West since apostolic times. Those decrees that we see in the 11th century were only enforcing what was already the rule, not the introduction of a novelty.

So you are letting evil drive you from the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass? Do not let poor shepherds keep you from the Lord. His Church still stands even though there are some inside it who are not following His way.

But I would not be surprised if this Pope decides to make changes. We live in very interesting times.

“Learn from the Eastern Rites which permit a married clegy. Kid you not.”

And yet almost all of their priest saints throughout their history (and especially the last millennium) were celibate monks. Ever notice that?

The East is having to learn from us because so many of their seminarians are struggling to find wives these days as more women want to work outside the home and not take on a special religious role. And then you have where this will ultimately go... http://www.nytimes.com/1990/07/14/us/greek-orthodox-group-backs-married-bishops.html

With this Pope, I would not be surprised if there will be more changes to extend this provision to other nations where the Church is. A tradition going back to the apostles be condemned. Pope Francis simply does not care.

For one thing I do know is that for the bishops in the Eastern Rites, monks appointed to bishops.

Funny how so many think that being single/celibate should be a requirement - I think it was Peter who suggested they should be celibate, but if they wanted to engage in sex, they should get married - then he stated it was his opinion and not a requirement.

Priests are supposed to act as marriage counselors along with everything else - makes it tough if the union is only a concept to the "counselor"...

Some folks in the 12th century wanted it and the Church made it so - and probably caused a lot of problems, not the least of which is making the priests seem "extra special" instead of being men who were dedicated to carrying the message.

So by you logic, celibate heterosexuals are not qualified to counsel either married couples or homosexuals?

I think it was Paul who advised in your post’s first paragraph.
