The Ark of the Covenant, The Tabernacle, and The Temple

Hebrews 8 (New Testament)

The High Priest of a New Covenant

8 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.

3 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4 If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”[a] 6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said[b]:

“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
    when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
    and with the people of Judah.
9 It will not be like the covenant
    I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand
    to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
    and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
    after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
    and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
    and they will be my people.
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
    or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
    from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
    and will remember their sins no more.”[c]

13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.

And , Just as Abraham was called out of the pagan land of Ur,
We also are called out of the world.
To Bless those Children of Abraham,
Whom YOU have designated as the children of the Promise,
And love them as You do
We Ask That You bring all that has been hidden out into the daylight.
We Plead on behalf of the Widows, Unemployed, Orphans, and Homeless.
We Plead for our Military, who get prosecuted for doing their job.
We Pray For Upright, Transparent, Just Government Honestly Elected by the People,
For the People, and
Of the People.
We Pray for Living Water to Flow throughout the land, cleansing us from all iniquity and bringing New Life.

We Pray For the Leaders of Our Own Beloved USA
May They Receive Wisdom from You
to do the Right Thing.

We Pray For The Swift and Sure Coming of Messiah,
Blessed Be He,
To Establish His Kingdom,
and Make All Things Right.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

A modern anecdotal story tells of hikers in the American Southwest finding ruins of what looked like buildings from Ancient Egypt. Since there IS a religion in our country that believes in parallel Biblical Happenings in the New World, this caused great excitement. Further examination of the artifacts showed that they were of early Twentieth Century Manufacture, and were, in fact, left-over movie sets from Cecil B. DeMille's Silent 1923 Version of "The Ten Commandments". DeMille was so relentless in "following the pattern" of Ancient Egyptian artifacts, even though his movie was in black & white, that the left over items were thought to be genuine.

As we followed the Tabernacle, The Ark of the Covenant, and The Temple through the entire Bible, from their first mention in Exodus all the way through to today's Chapter, it is like being one of those hikers in Southern California, coming upon a little stone sphinx, and saying, "Aha! I KNOW What this is! I get it! I recognize the pattern!"

But, alas, just as the artifact was a modern copy of the REAL Ancient Thing, so were the Tabernacle, The Ark, and The Temple, were copies based on the REAL THING, in Heaven. The Writer of Hebrews brings to mind the incredible Glory of the Ark of the Covenant, but reminds us that it is a mere foreshadow of the Immense and Intense Glory of the Throne of Heaven.

After filming his silent epic, Cecil B. DeMille buried his sets in the desert, and they were forgotten. Then, years later, in the early 50's, using all the advances that had occurred in 30 years of film-making, he made the wonderful and famous movie starring Charlton Heston. To S-T-R-E-T-C-H the analogy a bit further, the Silent Film was destroyed like Solomon's Temple was, and the Second Temple was built and renovated by Herod using all the latest technology at his disposal to produce a wonder. But, like Herod, DeMille added a lot of stuff that was not in the Biblical pattern. (The love affair between Moses and Nefertiri, the sibling rivalry between Moses and Ramses, were not in the Bible, but spruced up the movie a whole lot!) And in a horrible parallel to the destruction of the Temple, The Title "The Ten Commandments" ended up being a stage musical in Hollywood, with Val Kilmer playing a singing and dancing "Moses". (I am not making this up!)

There is no way a man-made copy, no matter how closely the pattern has been followed, can equal the Glory, the Wonder, and the Magnificence of Heaven.
