The selection of Pence marks the first time a sitting vice president delivers the commencement address at the Catholic university.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — U.S. Vice President Mike Pence will be this year’s commencement speaker at the University of Notre Dame, it was announced Thursday.
This will mark the first time a sitting vice president delivers the commencement address at the university. Pence will also receive an honorary degree at the May 21 ceremony.
“It is fitting that in the 175th year of our founding on Indiana soil that Notre Dame recognize a native son who served our state and now the nation with quiet earnestness, moral conviction and a dedication to the common good characteristic of true statesmen,” said Notre Dame’s president, Holy Cross John Jenkins, in a statement.
“With his own brand of reserved dignity, Mike Pence instilled confidence on the state level then, and on the world stage now. We are proud to welcome him to represent the new administration.”
Pence was born in Columbus, Indiana, and served as governor of the state before becoming vice president.
Raised Catholic, he identified in 1994 as a “born-again, evangelical Catholic.” He started attending an evangelical megachurch with his family in the 1990s. It is unclear which church Pence attends now.

He has been chosen to give the commencement speech but do not jump to conclusions. We have to wait for the snowflakes to whine/complain/cry and threaten some superfluous demand so that another speaker can be chosen.
The invitation won’t stand a week. As soon as the campus marxist brownshirts get wind of it and start burning down buildings, the administration will be forced to rescind the invitation.
Your comment makes no sense. There has only been one incident involving a football team member and that never went anywhere because the accuser committed suicide. It was also seven years ago.

Notre Dame is a joke. They rushed to invite Obama to speak, and to give him an honorary degree, as soon as he became President, even though the only issue he had gone to bat for prior (when he was a Senator) was making sure babies who survived abortions were denied water and a blanket as they died. Yet, Notre Dame won't deign to invite Trump to speak. So, Notre Dame has invited Mike Pence to speak at its inauguration? Pence is a very fine person and a much better pick than Obama was. However, he used to be a Catholic and is now an evangelical Protestant. I wouldn't object, except that, again, Trump isn't good enough for an invitation? I understand why Pence isn't going to decline Notre Dame's invitation, but I'd love it if he were to do so.
