Catholic Caucus: Trump names a Catholic who was mocked on Ash Wednesday to be his press secretary

Trump names a Catholic who was mocked on Ash Wednesday to be his press secretary

December 22, 2016

It’s Sean Spicer, who should quickly emerge as one of the most visible members of the administration:

Spicer, the Republican National Committee’s communications director and chief strategist, has worked as a senior communications adviser to Trump during the transition. He had told reporters Thursday morning they could expect “further announcements on appointments and staff later today” and additional announcements “in the near future on fulfilling the final Cabinet positions.”

He also garnered some attention earlier this year on Ash Wednesday:

A slew of oblivious liberals took to Twitter on Wednesday to attack Sean Spicer, the Republic National Committee’s director of communications, over the “black smudge” on his forehead for Ash Wednesday, a symbol of his Catholic faith.

Mr. Spicer appeared on CNN to talk about the New Hampshire primary and was shown with the dark ashes on the center of his brow.

On Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, many Catholics will have ashes placed on their forehead in the shape of a cross.

But to the trolls on Twitter, it looked like Mr. Spicer had a make-up faux pas, and they proceeded to joke about it.

“DUDE. YOUR FOREHEAD,” one user tweeted with a screenshot of Mr. Spicer speaking on CNN.

“What’s up with the makeup @seanspicer?” another asked.

“@seanspicer someone pulled a prank on you or you’ve got something on your head lol,” another user tweeted.

For his part, Mr. Spicer took the tweets in stride, responding to each one with the #AshWednesday.

Other Catholics stepped in to defend Mr. Spicer and got a laugh out of the trolls’ ignorance.

“Dear Twitter trolls: Maybe less time on snarky tweets about the mark on @seanspicer’s forehead & more time learning about Ash Wednesday,” political strategist Mo Elleithee tweeted.

“Feeling bad for my RNC buddy @seanspicer, who’s having to explain his Catholicism to a shrivel of critics after his @CNN spox. #AshWednesday,” tweeted Mark Standriff, former director of communications at the California Republican Party.

I look forward to seeing him brief reporters next year on Ash Wednesday, complete with ashes—which just might be a first at the White House.

They may not know what Ash Wednesday ashes are, but they know what a hijab is, and they wouldn’t think of laughing at it. That would be a hate crime.

There is an odd psychological phenomenon I’m noting more and more among liberals and leftists. They so abhor and despise Christianity and spiritual Christians that seeing the symbols of Christianity actually causes them discomfort.

I call it “the vampire effect”. The fictional Count Dracula, in many incarnations in the movies always drew back and cringed at the sight of crosses, would not tread on holy ground, abhorred The Bible, and could be physically harmed with Holy Water.

Because leftists and liberals philosophically reject Christianity, as an article of their secular faith, it may become downright painful for them in the future. Which creates an interesting opportunity, for when liberals and leftists decide to harass Christians.

Joe Biden walled around with ash a few years back. I don’t remember the left’s reaction.

Yes, I do recall that photo. I don’t think Joe remembered (or understood given his liberal position on just about everything) what the priest said as he placed those ashes on his forehead...”remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return....”

The baseline for a modicum of historical, religious and intellectual understanding has bottomed out. I guess if a Hindu woman had a bindu on her forehead that would bring a brunt of twitter jokes though? Methinks not.

There was no mocking of Biden by the MSM. He got the treatment given to liberal (fake?) Catholics.

Well said.

The word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Pretty much any Catholic who shows up in the work place with ashes gets treated like an imbecile. The normalcy bias at work.

I look forward to his press conference on Ash Wednesday, it drives the heathens absolutely crazy to see them.

Being reminded of our mortality reflects the spirit of Job and Solomon.

... The fictional Count Dracula...

You do realize that there was a real-life Dracula.

His given name was Vladislov Tepes (sometimes Tepesh in English). He was also known as "Vlad the Impaler". He was the inspiration for the fictional accounts

When I was a kid, I read the passage below over and over, and just couldn't imagine anyone being offended by Jesus. But now I see these morons and get what He meant by it:

Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” —Matthew 11:4-4

I don’t think anyone in the Trump White House will be calling the Knights of Columbus “failed foot soldiers of an army of oppression” anymore.
