Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

The Book of Psalms

(Psalm 43)

Psalm 43[a]

1 Vindicate me, my God,
    and plead my cause
    against an unfaithful nation.
Rescue me from those who are
    deceitful and wicked.

2 You are God my stronghold.
    Why have you rejected me?
Why must I go about mourning,
    oppressed by the enemy?

3 Send me your light and your faithful care,
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your holy mountain,
    to the place where you dwell.

4 Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God, my joy and my delight.
I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

5 Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
    for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Just last night, something happened in my own family that I would like to share with you. My nephew, an incredible guitarist, worked his way up in a prominent chain restaurant from bus boy, to waiter, to line cook, and was promoted and trained to be the sous chef several months ago. From the moment he was “promoted”, he had ALL the work and responsibilities of the sous chef(supervising all the cooks, ordering food, managing the kitchen, developing menus, etc), WITHOUT the corresponding title or increase in salary. He kept asking his boss when this was going to take place and was put off. In the meantime anything that went wrong was blamed entirely on him, so he had all the stress and none of the benefits. I have been praying for him, because I have been in similar situations many times, where I have been treated unjustly on the job, and let it go on for months.

Here’s the punch line:

Last night, my nephew announced that he has been offered the position of sous chef at our city’s largest and most famous Rock Venue, with benefits, a $15,000 increase in salary, free tickets to all the awesome concerts and a chance to perhaps grow in his musical career as well.

Today's Psalm speaks of vindication. David suffered for YEARS at the hand of Saul his "boss". He even had two opportunities to kill Saul, but refrained from doing so. As both Jonathan and other advisors told Saul, David had never done anything to deserve this abuse, and had, in fact, been a loyal and good subject of the king. The only possible reason for Saul's abusive behavior was jealousy.

God, however, vindicated David. His Grace and Mercy prevailed and David became a great king, ruling for many years. This Psalm was originally attached to the one before it, but I like it better "detached", because sometimes, God's vindication does not come immediately. Perhaps that makes it even better when it DOES happen.
