I think this public spat could indicate there may be a political movement among the College of Cardinals to “encourage” Pope Francis to retire.

Ssshh. you aren’t allowed to use the term Political when it comes to the Catholic Church. It is all just about Faith..or some such thing. Politics couldn’t possibly be involved..so I was told over and over and over again on this site.
Oh, and you need not call them Cardinals to give weight to the actions. They are Bishops, after all. So let history who is recording this event call them 4 Bishops.
That’s exactly what it is.
Regardless of what other points are made here (I'm not Catholic), I had great respect for some recent popes who stood by the rightness of God's word and saw no reason to modernize to fit the whims of societal norms.

When the church protects the unborn or stands opposed to homosexual marriage, it does so not out of bigotry but out of consistency with the teachings of Scripture.
What is right in the eyes of God is not up for constant debate and revision. It is a truth that will forever be true regardless of what the pop culture demands. If it means people walk away from the church in disgust, they can comfort themselves with the knowledge that crowds of people walked out on Jesus too. Jesus was not in search of a fan base but in search of those who wanted a correct spiritual relationship with Him.
Then what use is scripture or tradition?:
