Decries video as "against the dignity of human life and is a desecration of the altar"
Earlier today we wrote about the actions of Father Frank Pavone, founder of Priests for Life, who placed an aborted fetus on an altar while delivering a homily that involved electioneering regarding todays election.
Now, Bishop Patrick J. Zurek of the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, has announced that he is opening an investigation into Fr. Pavone and his actions, writing:
Priests for Life, Inc., is not a Catholic institution, but a civil organization, and it is not under the control or supervision of the Diocese of Amarillo.

Why no investigations why the Kennedy clan has not been excommunicated?
That would certainly get the message across, putting a fetus on the alter. That’s shocking the faithful; they probably don’t need to know that as much in Amarillo of all places though.
I can see how doing something like that would be too intense but could one do so with the same affect with a fake fetus? Or something resembling that?
You should start a thread on that but that is not the subject here.
Because we don’t know if they repented and went to Confession from their deathbed.
“Bishop Patrick J. Zurek... is opening an investigation.” Lame. The bishop is fighting a losing battle and loyal Catholics will watch, take notes and feel despair. Some are told to write a letter to Rome which is like writing a letter to Senator Boxer. Waste of time.
I am a great admirer of Fr. Pavone. But if the Catholic Church has anything resembling an Orthodox understanding of what the altar is, and what it is for, then he has screwed up. Badly. The only body and blood EVER allowed on the altar is His. Fr. P’s motives are not in doubt. But this was a spectacular error in judgement. He needs to humble himself, admit his mistake and ask pardon.
I agree. An excellent reply.
The Diocese of Amarillo deeply regrets the offense and outrage caused by the video for the faithful and the community at large. The action and presentation of Father Pavone in this video is not consistent with the beliefs of the Catholic Church.
The Diocese of Amarillo is opening an investigation about all these matters.
**** "Aborted Fetus" is a term which is an offense against the dignity of a murdered child that was created in the image and likeness of God ****
I don’t have a memo on this. Are we supposed to reply, “Liturgical abuse is great as long as it’s our liturgical abuse?” or “+10 for Zeal, but poor judgment.”
Pope Francis offers Beach Ball during Mass.
If I correctly understand you, you’re saying, “Liturgical abuse for the ‘right reason’ is great, because it also takes place for ‘wrong’ reasons.”
If that’s not an accurate summary, could you explain your point in words?
Correction to my above pic, it was NOT during Mass, but during a Prayer that he offered the beach ball as a gift to the Madonna at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
Point well taken. Given post Vatican II liturgical changes, I do wonder how many Novus Ordo Catholics (including Novus Ordo priests) have the Catholic understanding of the “altar”.
I am not defending liturgical abuse. I am familiar with Patrick Zurek from his time in the Archdiocese of San Antonio as an Auxiliary Bishop.
Not a fan.
Have also been around Fr Pavone back before Mother Angelica built the Monastery in Hanceville. I would stay in one of the guesthouses for Nun’s families, and Network guests. He was a frequent visitor.
He was very consumed in the plight of the unborn, also a defender of the elderly, and those with special needs.
This was in the late nineties.
I guess I am saying that liturgical abuses are like degrees of sin. Some are venial, some are mortal.
That seems to me to be pure relativism. Liturgical abuses by "our guy" are merely wrong, while liturgical abuses by "that other guy" are really most sincerely wrong.
I think this can be resolved very simply: Bishop says, "Father, that wasn't acceptable." Fr. Pavone says, "You're right, I got carried away. I won't do it again."
Did you see Fr Pavone’s response video?
Did you see Fr Pavone’s response video?
It probably can be resolved with that. However, I would not be surprised if Bishop Zurek calls Fr. Pavone back to parish work in Amarillo with strict orders for media silence as penance.
If you’re around, I’m always interested in your take re: these two.
