A senior Anglican archbishop from the Global South called for the Church to be ready to sacrifice their lives for the sake of Christ in the face of persecution, restrictions, terrorism, and violence carried out in the name of religion.
Archbishop Mouneer Anis of Cairo was addressing archbishops and bishops from some of the most difficult places in the world in which to practise the Christian faith: Sudan, Nigeria, Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya, Burundi, Southern Africa, West Africa, Indian Ocean, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South East Asia.
More than 100 delegates also discussed the importance of ecumenical and inter-faith dialogue. Guests* at the opening session included representatives of the Vatican, Coptic Orthodox Church and Al Azhar University in Cairo, the seat of Sunni learning.
The leaders of the Anglican Communions Global South (the worlds third largest Christian denomination, after the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches) which is home to 72 per cent of the worldwide Anglican population, or about 62 million people discussed critical challenges facing them, including poverty, the refugee crisis and religious violence.
Archbishop Anis said the Church in the Global South had many challenges and weaknesses, and highlighted the prevalence of disease and polygamy, tribalism, corruption, and harsh treatment of women, as well as false teaching of the prosperity gospel, and the teaching of the Jehovahs Witnesses and Mormons.
He also warned of an ideological slavery resulting from some Western churches and organisations us[ing] their wealth and influence to push their own agendas in the Global South. He continued: We need to be aware of this, and resist all kinds of slavery, whether financial or ideological, or else face cultural defeat and captivity.
While the archbishop and other speakers stressed fidelity to the teachings of Christ and criticised provinces...........

490 has come and come Father. No more turning the cheek to Islam
May the Holy Spirit strengthen Archbishop Mouneer and his congregants. The Anglican Communion is standing strong in the most surprising places.
Sacrifice?
Not until we have fought the low life slime to the end.
Death to Islam.
They say it about us.
It is long past time to return the favor.
In spades.
This Roman Catholic is fully prepared for his coming martyrdom. We only get to die once, what better reason than to go out fighting satanic mozlems?
Bring it!
Go, Trump, GO!
Nah, make the other poor sonofabitch be a martyr for HIS religion.
..and the Clinton camp is looking forward to empowering islam ..and completing the Obama agenda.
Yup, that is what is needed. Get rid of liberty, rights and freedom!
Who needs democracy? It’s a Christian thing!
Whatever that’s called, alas, the bible does not call it Christian (actually the word Christian isn’t in the bible — the word used is the “Way”).
One thing that creates problems in Christendom is its behavior as though God had made it earthly territory promises, when its promises are in a different dimension. If earthly war can be avoided then it ought to be. Christians need to think outside of the worldly box.
Christians can advise, but qua Christians they can’t give orders on a secular scale.
Just a detail perhaps, but in the Acts of the Apostles it does say that it was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.
Martyrdom should never be a goal. Take arms against those who would harm you.
Well put.
Sobieski and the Polish army that saved the West in 1683 would understand.
Acts 11:26 - .and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
Acts 26:28 - Then Agrippa said to Paul, Do you think that in such a short time you can persuade me to be a Christian?
OK, other people called them Christians.
This is in the vein of “I am of Jesus” (but according to the flesh).
Jesus and the apostles and disciples themselves taught something more sublime, namely “the way.”
The bible records it, yes; stands behind the usage, no.
The word Christian is in the bible then — but correcting that my main point stands. It isn’t biblically advocated.
I would prefer Pattons aphorism on this, about making the enemy die for his country. How about a return to the church militant.
Show me in the Bible where the Bible advocates calling Christianity "the Way".
Mind you, I'm not against the "Way" terminology at all. After all, Christ is the Way. And the Truth. And the Life. I'm just making the point that the Bible doesn't precisely "advocate" this as the designated term for His disciples, any more than it advocates, say, "Sola Scriptura."
>”The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.”
The Church of self defense needs no martyrs.
Was Jesus a martyr?
