From the Mouth of God

"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work" (2 Tim. 3:16-17).

God’s Word is inspired.

Second Timothy 3:16 speaks of the inspiration of Scripture. "Inspired" is the translation of a Greek word that literally means "God-breathed." Every word of Scripture is from the mouth of God.

Theologians speak of inspiration as the mysterious process by which God worked through the authors of Scripture to produce inerrant and divinely authoritative writings. Inspiration is a mystery because Scripture doesn't explain specifically how it occurred. The only glimpse we have is this from 2 Peter: "Know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God" (vv. 20-21).

"Interpretation" speaks of origin. Scripture didn't originate on the human level, but with the Holy Spirit, who moved upon the authors to write it (v. 21). "Moved" is the translation of a nautical term that describes the effects of wind upon a ship as it blows against its sails and moves it through the water. Similarly, the Spirit moved on the biblical writers to produce the Word of God in the language of men.

The human authors of Scripture knew they were writing God's Word, and did so with confidence and authority. Often they cited or alluded to one another as authoritative agents of divine revelation (e.g., 2 Pet. 3:15-17).

On a personal level, inspiration guarantees that what Scripture says, God says. It's His counsel to you, so you can study and obey it with full assurance that it is true and will never lead you astray.

Suggestions for Prayer

Praise the Lord for His inspired Word. Reaffirm your commitment to live according to its principles today.

For Further Study

Often the New Testament affirms the inspiration of the Old Testament by attributing Old Testament quotations to God Himself. For example, compare these Old Testament passages with their New Testament counterparts: Genesis 2:24 with Matthew 19:4-5; Psalm 2:1 with Acts 4:24-25; Isaiah 55:3 with Acts 13:34; Psalm 16:10 with Acts 13:35; Psalm 95:7 with Hebrews 3:7.

How might you respond to someone who says that the Bible is merely the words of devout religious men?

During the Twentieth Century Anno Domini (AD) mathematicians proved that there are ordinary truths within relatively simple logical and numerical systems that cannot be proven within those systems. Physicists observed that there were fundamental limits to the precision of simultaneously measuring related physical quantities. The inescapable conclusion is that it is impossible for us to discover a Universal Theory of Everything (UToE) by observing and reasoning about the observed universe.

The only way that we, as human beings, can understand the universe, let alone our place in it, is to have the Creator of the Universe (CotU) tell us what we need to know. The premise of this document is that the CotU has given us what we need to know about His creation in the form of the Holy Scriptures of the Hebrews and the Christians. The fundamental plan is laid out in the Tanach (also known as (aka) the Old Testament), but this document contains some “mysteries”. The “mysteries” within the Tanach are revealed in the “Renewed Covenant” (aka New Testament) writings that make up the second part of the Christian Bible. The Renewed Covenant itself contains some things that are specifically not revealed, perhaps to remind us that we are incapable of knowing and understanding all things.

In a more mathematical sense, the Holy Scriptures are a projection (aka mapping) into our world of the CotU’s plan for the evolution of His creation from the beginning to the end. What is called “Bible Prophecy” does not come true because the CotU knows what is going to happen. “Bible Prophecy” comes true because it is a mapping from the actual plan (aka The Word) that makes things happen in the universe that we experience.

It is also why believers can trust holy Scripture above anything men may think up and teach or write. It has authority because it IS God's word and not because some church leaders decided it did. It is the basis for all the truths of the faith and no doctrines are binding upon the believer unless they are found in Scripture.

My comment had to do with the author's conclusion that:

The human authors of Scripture knew they were writing God's Word, and did so with confidence and authority. Often they cited or alluded to one another as authoritative agents of divine revelation (e.g., 2 Pet. 3:15-17).

On a personal level, inspiration guarantees that what Scripture says, God says. It's His counsel to you, so you can study and obey it with full assurance that it is true and will never lead you astray.

The Scripture cited above tells us this as do the myriad passages telling about how Jesus used Scripture to dispute the lies of Satan at his temptation. Paul said he didn't shrink "from declaring unto you the whole counsel of God" (Acts 20:27) Then we have the multiple verses that say, "it is written", "thus sayeth the Lord" and so on. John said that the whole world couldn't contain all the books that could be written about Jesus but that what he DID write was so "that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name."(John 20:31) In John's epistle, he stated, "These things I have written unto you that you may know you have eternal life." (I John 5:13)

These verses and many more like them tell us that we can trust what God has revealed in His word, that because it IS from Him, we can be assured it is the truth and God keeps His word. Can you name anything else that has the same authority as the revealed word of God? That is why we can base our faith upon what it says and was why the early leaders of our faith relied upon Scripture for knowing and proclaiming the rule of faith. They also knew when someone was a false prophet, a teacher of heresy or who would corrupt the word of God. Knowing God's word helps us to be mature in our faith and to "no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming." (Ephesians 4:14).

Does this help?

Is reposting what I was referring to in my comment just "cut and paste" to you? As for Scriptures that back up what I said, I already gave them to you! You claim "nowhere in the article (my comment?) did it state that", were you expecting a verbatim example? I get the impression your challenge wasn't an honest one after all and my taking the time to give you an answer was pointless.

Here's the thing, if, for example, you accept that Scripture teaches the doctrine of the Trinity, but doesn't use THE word Trinity anywhere, then you ought to accept the intrinsic authority of the God-breathed Holy Scripture. Do you?

You are absolutely correct. Scripture constantly praises scripture calling it "God Breathed". It is inerrant. Yet both the OT prophets and Christ himself never hesitate to condemn the traditions of men.
