Many observers were troubled by the news that Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, archbishop of Vienna, Austria, was chosen by Pope Francis to be one of the main speakers at the press conference on 8 April in order to present the Apostolic Exhortation on the Family. He had caused a controversy shortly after the last October 2015 Synod on the Family when he proposed to see the positive elements of homosexual union. The Austrian Cardinal said: We can and we must respect the decision to form a union with a person of the same sex, [and]to seek means under civil law to protect their living together with laws to ensure such protection.
In spite of this concern, many German-speaking media outlets are reading Cardinal Schönborns prominent role at the upcoming 8 April press conference as a reward for his crucial role during the 2015 Synod whose final report abstained generally from condemning sin and opened up to further discussion the idea that remarried divorcees might be able after all with the help of a priest in the internal forum to discern their future integration into the life of the Church. While the admittance to the Sacraments was not explicitly mentioned in the Synods final report, many participants such as Cardinal Walter Kasper saw it as an opening of the door for a more liberalized receiving of Holy Communion. Kasper even said so on 26 October 2015:
I am very pleased. The door was opened in order to grant remarried divorcees access to Communion with the help of a case-by-case examination. There is a certain opening, but one does not yet talk about the consequences. Now it all lies in Pope Francis hands, who is the one who decides.
Cardinal Schönborn is said to have had the most influential role in forging such a quiet compromise at the Synod that is to say, in the German-speaking language group, and with Cardinal Gerhard Müller as a defender of orthodoxy also present in it. As the Austrian website, kath.net, reported at the time, it was due to the persuasive influence of Cardinal Christoph Schönborn that a compromise position was found. The website said:
Without the diplomatic and linguistic capabilities of the Viennese Archbishop an agreement between the positions of Cardinals Walter Kasper and Gerhard Ludwig Müller would probably not have taken place. Kath.net received this clarifying insight from one participant of the German-language group who prefers not to be mentioned by name and who also privately commented that, at times, the discussions in the German group were controversial, but to the point.
We had mentioned earlier at OnePeterFive that Cardinal Schönborn might even have somehow privately involved Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI himself during the Synod, and acquired his insights, in order to come to an acceptable compromise between Cardinals Kasper and Müller. However, as we also reported, Cardinal Müller himself only recently made clear that he is not in favor of any liberalization with regard to the question of the remarried divorcees and their possible admittance to Holy Communion. In spite of this new statement, the problematic compromise position has found its way into the Synods final document and could potentially be used by Pope Francis in his Apostolic Exhortation to open up a more liberalizing path for the remarried divorcees.
In this context, then, it is easily to be understood that this Cardinal would now receive a special trust and honor for being selected to present the popes Apostolic Exhortation on the Family. The news agency of the Austrian Bishops, kathpress.at, accordingly praised Cardinal Schönborn on 1 April for his special role. It reports that Schönborn was surprised at the news that he was to present the popes exhortation. I only learned a few days ago about this honorable task, the cardinal said. He will now use every free minute in order to study the 200-page long document of the pope. I will be silent concerning the content until the date of its presentation. The Austrian Bishops website continues:
The decision of the pope to give Cardinal Schönborn the task to present the document might be connected with his theological and communicative merits in the context of the two Family Synods. Especially toward the end of the synodal discussion, the Viennese Cardinal was among the most demanded interview partners of international media outlets, to include La Stampa, Le Figaro, or Paris Match.
The Austrian Bishops news agency kathpress.at continues its explanation of Schönborns role during the 2015 Synod on the Family, as follows:
But Cardinal Schönborn also played a decisive role in the success of the Synod itself which was seriously in danger of not finding the necessary majorities for the topic. In the end, everything was clear after all: with a clear two-thirds majority, the Synod fathers approved the final document of the Synod containing 94 points.
At the end of the commentary, Cardinal Schönborn is quoted as saying: It was the best synod which I up to now was allowed to experience.
In before the “they’re all socialist pedophiles.”
I actually met Cardinal Schönborn last fall at a gathering of very conservative Catholics in Austria. I’m a fan, probably a groupie. But watching him very carefully.
Do you admire his eagerness to see homosexual perversion accepted as “marriage?” I have no idea whether he is or is not a socialist or whether he is or is not a a pedophile but he certainly has taken his stand to promote perversion. One thing is for sure the practice homosexual perversion is inherently evil. Schoenborn is now 71 and must submit his resignation as Archbishop of Vienna on or before January 22, 2020. Hurry on sundown! If there is a Catholic pope by then, maybe Vienna will get a Catholic Archbishop.
I’m surprised that you’re a fan, probably a groupie, of a man who would state, “We can and we must respect the decision to form a union with a person of the same sex, [and]to seek means under civil law to protect their living together with laws to ensure such protection.
Perhaps this is what prompted Ann Barnhardt’s two most recent posts:

I totally thought of the book "The Joy of Sex" when I saw the title of Francis' upcoming AE.....but I had NO IDEA that the Latin translation could actually equate to "The Joy of Sex".
God help us. The mockery has gone on long enough.
I’ve been saying for a while, “If there is not soon a Cleansing, Old Testament in scope and nature, then God owes Sodom and Gomorrah an apology”.
I have a friend who is in a same sex relationship. He’s getting older, in his 70s. No children, one sibling who has no children. He recently married his long time partner for estate planning reasons. I’m glad because I believe that they will take care of each other.
I have another friend who is same sex attracted. He’s about 65. I worry that he’s alone. He does have nieces and nephews and quite a bit of money so I think he’ll be okay.
Both of these men are very conservative in all other aspects.
I wish and pray that they were different but they aren’t going to change in my lifetime. I also am pretty sure that Jesus loves them.
Well, that was good for a few laughs. What speculation and hyperbole! But no facts.
The Vatican choice of Cardinal Schonborn to announce the AE is due to his prestigious and international reputation as the brilliant editor of the Catechism.
Furthermore, it is only in the eyes of American trads that the Cardinal is considered a “progressive.” In the Church generally, he is seen more as an conservative.
With “friends” like yours, please don’t mind that I’ll stay away from you.
Are you talking about the “catechism”, which it’s first edition was recalled in toto due to blatant heresy?
P.S.: What the difference between an "American trad" and a Roman Catholic?
Do you understand the purpose of publishing editions?
One is devout but paranoid, the other is protestant. If you don’t see the humor, I can’t help you.
I never see humor in sodomite perverts or those who defend those perverts.
I do; but you apparently don't. The Catholic Church released a heretical catechism, via your hero, Schoborn, which was immediately retracted.
3 years is not “immediate.” Are you talking about the first edition? Which was specifically labeled as subject to revision and for bishops only? Which the USCCB translated?
That was not retracted; it was a first edition. Further edits, modifications and changes were made, mostly due to an encyclical of JP2’s. Then a 2nd edition was released, not in any particular rush. Or perhaps, judging by your photo, you are referencing YOUCAT?
I agree with you: both have some problematic sections.
If you’re going to rave about heresy (”in toto,” heavens!) be specific. I can only guess you are referring to the clarifications on capital punishment, which were well known before that and widely taught on all levels, as I can recall going back to the 70’s.
Or perhaps you mean some of the YOUCAT stuff about teenage sexual behavior? I can see how both items would confuse someone with a simplistic understanding of doctrine.
Seeing how all of these developments took place under a man who is now a saint, and at least one other likely to be so, and arguably 3 of them among the greatest theologians of recent centuries... out of the thousands of expressions of faith in the new Catechism it seems a bit petty-minded to quibble over a few because they are not obvious to the uneducated mind. Rather like throwing the baby out with the bath water; what is the point?
P.S. Schonborn is not my hero. Goodness, how did you conclude that? I have a very realistic view of the man, and whatever few misguided ideas he may have (if we are even qualified to judge that), they are quite unimportant in the context of his entire career, his devotion to the Church, and his principled character.
Don’t try to think like a blogger, they are the very lowest form of psuedo-intellectual. Read the source documents, dear, and judge for yourself.
I think many people repulsed by what deviants do to each other would like to believe that in “unions” they will avoid the gauntlet of rest stop trysts with strangers and the danger/diseases involved with them. In any case, no Church representative has any business endorsing such “playing family” by the nuts & fruits...
