Catechism of the Catholic Church
A resource for your research
I *LOVE* the CCC. We started reading it as part of our morning devotions (daily lectionary, other Bible, CCC) a while back ... two years? four years? ... and we are going to finish it in the next couple of days. Wrapping up the commentary on the Our Father.
Then we’ll start over!
for Lent, 2016, Ping!
For Lent— I give up Lent!!
Wow! That is a tremendous example for all of us to follow.
I’ll give up soda, and donate to the Catholic Church if a pope appears who starts another Crusade. Heck, I’ll carry him on my shoulders and I’m a Protestant.
My wife and I give up alcohol for Lent. The hardest thing I do every year. I have never cheated. But its tough especially on certain times when everyone else is drinking. Best to just go to bed.
We did about a page a day, of the trade paperback version. There are short of 1,300 paragraphs, so at a paragraph a day, that would be less than four year. Maybe it took us three years ... I remember we started when my prayer group was studying a book on the Catechism by Cardinal Wuerl of Washington D.C. (Msgr. Pope’s boss).
Bump
I decided to go the the novena every Monday.
“For Lentâ I give up Lent!!”
Sounds like me...but this year I give up tuning out my family when concentrating on business online. Family’s better business.
I was NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER (100 more "ever"s) with giving up anything for Lent. SO, I decided to say a second rosary for Lent...I pray more. That is 100% successful for me. Nothing wrong with praying more.
==========================
I gave up drinking decades ago.
What I do is get a tall glass of ice water with a lot of ice cubes in it to "tinkle" and toast with. Everyone thinks I have a booze-drink. Win-win for me.
SOMEdays, to be different and “dangerous,” I put a lemon wedge in my ice-water drink. OOOooo, I think I might even add a wedge of LIME. :o)
==========================================
These are the dogmas in which Catholics must believe.
Anything else is either Apostolic Tradition or just tradition. We MAY believe them but we don't HAVE to.
So we don’t have to accept the Second Vatican Council, right?
I do that. I have lemon juice bottles from Costco that I drink in large quantities in the summer. A large glass of ice water with a table spoon of lemon juice. My day is divided into three parts. Coffee til noon. Ice tea until 4pm and then seltzer water or water with lemon. For some reason I can’t do water by itself.
But the reason I go to bed is not that I want a drink so much as I find people who are drinking to be boring. If I am not drinking, they are not funny, they are loud, and many times they don’t make sense. Also, if I am not drinking I get tired earlier. If I do drink I catch a second wind.
There are lots of positives to not drinking. I lose weight, feel better, sleep better, wake up earlier, and spend less. In fact, I don’t start drinking again for a few days after Lent when an event suggests a drink. I don’t suck down the first drink on Easter. Once I have gone without for a while its easier.
Drunks are BORES.
I stay away from too much coffee and tea since stimulants are one of the causes of hemorrhoids. So are sugar, spices, seeds (as in popcorn) and strings (celery).
Alcohol also increases my appetite. Lol. As if I needed it.
