Pope Francis Explains "Who Am I to Judge" in His New Book

Vatican City, Jan 12, 2016 / 03:02 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In his new book on God's mercy, Pope Francis explains that his oft-quoted words "who am I to judge", about a homosexual person who is searching for the Lord with a good will, is simply his reflection on Church teaching found in the catechism.

The Name of God is Mercy, to be released Jan. 12, is a book-length interview of Pope Francis by Italian journalist Andrea Tornielli. The book is meant to "reveal the heart of Francis and his vision," according to Tornielli's foreward. He had wanted to ask the Pope about mercy and forgiveness, "to analyze what those words mean to him, as a man and a priest."

The journalist asked Pope Francis about his experience as a confessor to homosexual persons and about his "who am I to judge" comment, made during his in-flight press conference from Rio de Janeiro to Rome July 28, 2013.

"On that occasion I said this: If a person is gay and seeks out the Lord and is willing, who am I to judge that person?" Pope Francis told Tornielli. "I was paraphrasing by heart the Catechism of the Catholic Church where it says that these people should be treated with delicacy and not be marginalized."

I am glad that we are talking about 'homosexual people' because before all else comes the individual person, in his wholeness and dignity. And people should not be defined only by their sexual tendencies: let us not forget that God loves all his creatures and we are destined to receive his infinite love. I prefer that homosexuals come to confession, that they stay close to the Lord, and that we pray all together. You can advise them to pray, show goodwill, show them the way, and....

"I was paraphrasing by heart the Catechism of the Catholic Church where it says that these people should be treated with delicacy and not be marginalized."

My recollection of this event is that Francis was asked specifically about the question of homosexual men in the priesthood, to which he replied "who am I to judge". His remarks were not directed to the issue of homosexuality in general. If so, his response here is disingenuous. A bishop must judge men who present themselves for ordination since failure to do this is precisely responsible for the sex abuse scandal caused largely by homosexual men unfit to be ordained who damaged innumerable lives and cost the Church billions. It's true that homosexuals in the abstract, should be treated with "delicacy" but that was not the context of the question posed during the in-flight press conference.

Then there's this:

And people should not be defined only by their sexual tendencies..."

The problem is that many homosexuals define themselves by their sexual activities, not tendencies. It's necessary to distinguish between homosexuals striving for chastity and those who are determined to promote the acceptance of sodomy as just another form of diversity.

I went to Catholic schools through third grade.

I wouldn’t describe the nuns as “who am I to judge” types.

Perhaps he is not to judge, however, he certainly must follow the Bible which means he is prohibited from condoning homosexual activity.

There is no such thing as paraphrasing by heart the Catholic Catechism.

But coming from a narcissistic man who interprets the the Bible to imply both Jesus and the Blessed Mother were not sinless, this is not surprising.

Psychobabble about syndromes, tendencies, orientations, etc. cannot be found in Scripture (a God-breathed safe zone from the absurd inventions of the world, the flesh and the devil).

We should always agree with God against ourselves, like the thief on the cross. “Whoever confesses his sins and renounces them finds mercy.”

A “Bride of Christ” pulled my hair in 1st grade for taking two straws for my milk during snack break! (Disclosure: 52 years ago! lol)

Has he ever condemned homosexual activity? He certainly seems to avoid the issue to me. Even to the point that he has been hailed by some on the left as tactically supporting homosexuals and their activities.

I still believe that’s why Benedict is no longer Pope, how found out something he shouldn’t have.

He “prefers” that the homosexual goes to confession? Doesn’t that imply that confession is an “ideal” and not a requirement?

Ambiguity... ambiguity....

He has never and will never condone homosexual behavior. The left always reads into what he says with their anti-God goals in mind....and the press is usually happy to report it that way too.

Consider the following accurate quote:

“This is God’s dream for his beloved creation: to see it fulfilled in the loving union between a man and a woman, rejoicing in their shared journey, fruitful in their mutual gift of self,” ...Pope Francis

This was a reaffirmation of the teaching of the Church. We should NEVER accept what we read in the press these days. Real journalism has long been DEAD.

I guess it depends on what you mean by "condoned".

What do you make of the mid-term relatio of the 2014 Extraordinary Synod on the Family which said that the homosexual orientation should be valued, and praised elements of same-sex partnerships? It created a huge furor and Cardinal Burke called it "unacceptable"

Does that qualify as condoning? If it does, perhaps this had nothing to do with Francis and was entirely the work of maverick underlings who would no doubt have been rebuked by Francis when he discovered their work?

The nuns I had were crooked lying judges, jurors and executioners.

As head of the Catholic Church, the Pope is the earthly voice of God. So, yeah, buddy, every word you utter should reflect God and the Bible. If you can’t do your job correctly, then it’s time to step down.

Precisely what I think every time I hear Francis trash-talking about "rosary counters" and "rigid" traditionalists, "fundamentalists" "moralistic quibblers" and "self-absorbed, Promethean neo-Pelagians".

There's a whole collection of the insults he's hurled at those whose only crime is loving the Tradition of the Catholic Church.

Did you read his speeech at the end of the 2015 Synod on the Family when he "went off" at the cardinals who had blocked elements of the final report because of its errors?

Talk about "crucifying"!

In nursery school, I needed to go potty but the nun said her hands were too cold to undo my overall hooks for me. I messed my pants. The nuns hollered at and punished me.

In 1st grade, we had uniform shoes. One nun made us take them off and put them in a big pile. Then we were supposed to find our own. Another student took mine but the nun wouldn’t make them give them back so I had to wear someone else’s ratty shoes the rest of the year. Mine were corrective so it was obvious the old ratty ones weren’t mine. Mom didn’t have the money to buy new ones again. Also, in 1st grade, I was sick but wasn’t allowed to go to the restroom. I told the nun I was going to up chuck and she said if I did, I’d be sitting in vomit the rest of the day. Yes, that’s what happened. She left it there for three days when I returned to school and made me clean it up. Another nun told us the Devil was at the back of the Church so we couldn’t look. We were scared everytime we exited. On class picture day, we were told we didn’t have wear our uniforms but the ones who didn’t were punished.

At First Communion, I’d left my brand new purse at the alter and wasn’t allowed to retrieve it, nor would she get it for me.

In junior high, the priest got angry with us for going to a friend’s Baptist Church hay ride. On Ash Wednesday, another priest got angry and put the ashes down everyone’s noses who had bangs.

When taking the admittance test for HS, there was an oddly worded question which HS we were supposed to attend. Someone asked the nun to explain it and she told us to write in the name of the public school we were enrolled in (hallelujah, I was a public school student by then). Of course, everyone’s parents got a rejection letter because we’d followed the nun’s instructions instead of writing in that we were enrolled at the Catholic school. That nun’s flat out lie got me in sooo much trouble at home but it saved me from going back to Catholic school, woo hoo!

Those are some random injustices from holier than thou nuns. I swore no child of mine would ever attend a Catholic school.
