Vladimir Putin has received authorization to use Russian military power in defense of besieged Syrian President Bashir Assad. He has wasted no time, having launched a series of airstrikes against the terror group ISIS, but there are ominous reports that Putin has also attacked US backed rebel army elements as well.
The situation is very confusing, but I think it would profit to try to make some sense of it, since it has extremely serious Geopolitical implications and most importantly it is of immense prophetic significance as well.
How did the world arrive at this mess?
The Syrian Civil War is a direct consequence of the centerpiece of Obama foreign policy, “The Arab Spring”. Essentially the Obama doctrine has been one of postcolonial re-arrangement of the Middle Eastern order. Secular, pragmatic leadership was installed over the Middle East after World War 1 by the victorious allies,Britain and France.
Leaders such as Mubarek of Egypt, The Hussein’s of Jordan, Qaddafi of Libya, the Sauds, and even people such as Saddam Hussein in Iraq were extremely ruthless in their rule, but they knew what savage forces they had to restrain to maintain order in their respective lands.In short, they harshly subdued any form of Salafist Islam that emerged, knowing that to allow such any freedom would result in mayhem and destruction in their own lands.
Obama’s doctrine, which began in 2009 in his speech to the entire Muslim World, from Al Azhar University in Egypt, (the Harvard, Yale and Cambridge of Sunni Terrorism and rebellion), was to empower the banned Islamist groups, bringing them to the tables of power, and allowing them to run in elections for power and control over the Middle East.
One of the Obama administration prerequisites for coming to Al Azhar, was that Egypt would have to legitimize the banned Muslim Brotherhood. Shortly after, there was an election in Egypt, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate was elected, and the reign of terror, murder and mayhem was so intense, the Egyptian army had to take control again of the nation.
The “Arab Spring” has gone from Arab country to country, unseating secular, pragmatic leaders,and installing radical Islamists wherever possible, and wherever this has been resisted in the Middle East, there has been hell to pay for everyone involved. Perhaps hardest hit have been the Christians of the Arab world, who are currently being slaughtered genocidally as a result of American policy.
Syria is the nation currently holding off baying bands of Islamists. The nation of 22 million, has lost half of its population, mostly as refugees, but more than 250 thousand Syrians have been killed in this three-year civil war.$ Million Syrians have been housed in tent cities in Turkey, 2 million in Lebanon, millions more have been displaced and wander about Syria and Iraq. Millions more are trying to find asylum in Europe.
The ruling Assad family were from a minority sect in Islam, the Alawites, an offshoot of Shia Islam. Hafez Assad and his successor Son Bashir have ruled Syria through a very brutal police state system. The rebels which have been attacking Syria are western backed, Sunni armies, equipped with western weapons and tactics.
After Obama’s sudden and feckless withdrawal of US power from Iraq, One of those US backed rebel factions turned from seeking to oust Assad, to seizing an area the size of Indiana between Iraq and Syria, and declaring the resurrected “Caliphate” of the Islamic State.That faction is called ISIS or ISIL.
ISIS seized the Iraqi city of Mosul(Ninevah), an oil rich banking center which housed a considerable amount of Iraqi gold reserves. This allowed the terror group to become , not only the rickets terror group in the world, but one of the rickets organizations of any kind, in the world!
When ISIS was attacking Assad, we (The US) loved them, fed them and equipped them.We looked the other way when they committed hellish atrocities, we allowed them to persecute Christians, and we wouldn’t even arm one of our most pro-American factions in the region, the Kurds, in their life and death struggle with ISIS.
Syrian president Bashir Assad has friends also. The Iranians are on his side. They are Shiite, as is Hezbullah, the Syrian Lebanese military force. Russia also has long supplied weapons and now Russian ground troops and Air Force have come into the conflict.
The Obama Administration has long been giving lip service to the “Degradation” of ISIS, but has taken only tepid actions. US airmen complained that on sorties against them, they have spotted valuable targets only to be restrained by command from taking them out.
Enter Putins Russia, portraying itself as the defender of Syrian Christians. The last strongholds Assad holds in Syria is the section traditionally rich with Christians. The Christians of Syria have stood with Assad though this conflict.
The US is still supporting forces trying to oust Assad, while Russia is currently launching airstrikes against those same forces. This is becoming a proxy war between the US and Russia.
The Prophets Jeremiah,Isaiah and Zechariah all agree that something terrible which has never happened before is going to occur in Damascus and wider Syria.
I quote from an earlier article of mine, Syria in Prophecy-
The prophet Isaiah predicted that at the time of the end, a dreadful thing which has not ever happened in history is to occur. Damascus will cease from being a city, no longer will it be a seat of Government, a heap of rubble is it’s future.
Jeremiah implies that shortly before her destruction, Damascus will be surprised that Jerusalem is not “deserted” as she expected, this causes Damascus to lose heart herself.
Damascus has grown feeble; She turns to flee, And fear has seized her. Anguish and sorrows have taken her like a woman in labor. Why is the city of praise not deserted, the city of My joy? Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets, And all the men of war shall be cut off in that day,” says the LORD of hosts. “ I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, And it shall consume the palaces of Ben-Hadad.”( Jeremiah 49:24-27)
Whatever the provocation, the destruction of Damascus will reflect badly upon Israel in the court of world opinion. The world will turn on Israel, blaming her for what happens to Damascus. What little favor Israel had enjoyed up till then will shrivel up, it will resemble the last few olives left after the shaking of the olive tree by the reapers.
“ In that day it shall come to pass That the glory of Jacob will wane, And the fatness of his flesh grow lean. It shall be as when the harvester gathers the grain, And reaps the heads with his arm; It shall be as he who gathers heads of grain In the Valley of Rephaim. Yet gleaning grapes will be left in it, Like the shaking of an olive tree, Two or three olives at the top of the uppermost bough, Four or five in its most fruitful branches,” Says the LORD God of Israel.(Isaiah 17:4-6)
Damascus shall be obliterated in the context of a wider war, which will be destructive of other Arab cities as well, such as the area we call Gaza, which is a terrorist state designated as part of the U.N.imposed “two state solution”, but which God calls, “the nation not desired”…
Gather yourselves together, yes, gather together, O undesirable nation, Before the decree is issued, Or the day passes like chaff, Before the LORD’s fierce anger comes upon you, Before the day of the LORD’s anger comes upon you! (Zechariah 2:1-2)
For Gaza shall be forsaken, And Ashkelon desolate; They shall drive out Ashdod at noonday, And Ekron shall be uprooted. Woe to the inhabitants of the seacoast, The nation of the Cherethites! The word of the LORD is against you, O Canaan, land of the Philistines: (Zephaniah 2:4-5)
The one positive aspect of these terrible times, is that even the hardest of men will begin to seek the living God,
In that day a man will look to his Maker, And his eyes will have respect for the Holy One of Israel. (Isaiah 17:7)
Zechariah echoes Isaiah,
The burden of the word of the LORD in the land of Hadrach, and Damascus shall be the rest thereof: when the eyes of man, as of all the tribes of Israel, shall be toward the LORD.(Zechariah 9:1)
The international outcry that will be raised against Israel will be unprecedented. The nations line up to register complaint in the U.N., newspaper headlines will scream, pundits will wax eloquent with moral indignation, religious leaders will pontificate against Israel, her former lovers will leave her, and it will be extremely unfashionable to stand with God’s chosen people in that day.
Woe to the multitude of many people Who make a noise like the roar of the seas, And to the rushing of nations That make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters! 13 The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters; …(Isaiah 17:11-12)
But the outcry will merely be the prelude to the outpouring of Divine wrath upon all nations . Tribulation such as never occurred upon the earth, the wind and the sea raging, and men’s hearts failing them for fear…
But God will rebuke them and they will flee far away, And be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind, Like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.(Isaiah 17: 13-14)
But it is as in the evening, which seems always darkest before dawn, such is the tribulation and time of Jacob’s trouble, as Isaiah says,
Then behold, at eventide, trouble! And before the morning, he is no more. This is the portion of those who plunder us, And the lot of those who rob us.(Isaiah 17:14)

How on Earth does 0dunga remain in office when there's solid evidence he is working to advance the Caliphate to the detriment of America?
Then we started feeding arms to the rebels aka ISIS. Russia said to stay out. Obama keeps pushing....I believe Obama has gone insane.

"In the latter part of their reign" speaks of the four kingdoms that arose after Alexander the Great's death and power over his kingdom was divided among his four generals.

The President is recovering from severe TESTOSTERONE BURNS he suffered during his short photo op meeting with Russian President Putin this week.
Though not as serious as those he suffered during much longer exposure during his October, 2014 meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, doctors advised him to reschedule his planned announcement and celebration of MARTIAL LAW set for this coming New Year’s Eve. He SHOULD, however, be sufficiently recovered to leave DC BEFORE the TRUMP INAUGURATION but to BE PRESENT at his ensuing TRIAL for TREASON!

Just to get you thinking ...as you seem well versed.
It is important to consider several things in Biblical punctuation. In Revelations we see, “holy city” and then Holy City, both refer to Jerusalem one under gentile rule and one under God’s rule.
I might put forth the idea in the verse you quoted that the destruction of the holy people, just might be those who think they are holier than all the rest of us infidels verses the Holy People of God.

Who exactly did you have in mind here?
We know the time of the Gentiles comes to an end. Those in Christ and who survive persecution will themselves be called up, raptured if I may, sometime prior to the day of the Lord.
I lean toward the holy people (lower case) being those above, those in Messiah (Prince of princes), we are a mighty lot as referenced in v.24.
I don't think the verse refers to those who they think they're holy (godly) without actually being so. The gnashing of teeth thing (those who thought they were but weren't) comes after the millennial reign.

It's complicated but a key prophecy to understanding others, IMHO. :-)
Obviously I was thinking of Islam, but the reference might refer to the Jews, God’s chosen People.
Deuteronomy 7:6 refers to the Jews as God’s holy people:
For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.
vs.
A great set of comparisons found here: http://biblehub.com/isaiah/62-12.htm notice how some of the versions say The Holy People or The holy people after the comma? The word the is capitalized, why? And of course the literal translation at the end.
Isaiah 62:12 tells exactly who The Holy People are. So, who then is the holy people being referenced? Islam certainly considers itself the holy people and so do the Jews, along with dozens of others who claim they are a holy people.
Way back in my memory is the lesson of being observant of what is capitalized and when references the same/similar thing, but is then not capitalized. It is meant to show God’s Holy Spirit is no longer present or a place, people are in sin.
One needs to be careful as well when defining such very fine details to get a literal translation because something as simple as word capitalization changes whole meanings.
You have me thinking perhaps "holy people" could mean all people who consider themselves holy in their own eyes as you first suggested (Not sure if this would include the Jews).
One of the things I've recently become pretty convinced of is when you see the word beast mentioned in scriptures, it refers to a governing entity. We see governments attempting to do away with religions of any flavor. You see it in America today, China, the Soviet Russia attempted it. The Seleucid Empire was one of the first to attempt to eradicate Jewish beliefs.
I'm also convinced governing entities(s) are what will be destroyed at the end of this age, along with millions if not billions of people, of course.
I think those in Messiah (Christians) will be removed from the equation at some point. If that is true, in the final scenes, there will be those "left behind", people of other beliefs, and remaining Jews.
This has to be taken one step at a time. Need to determine what the actual difference in capitalization means.
I tracked the Use back to the Hebrew. There is a difference in the Hebrew as well.
Daniel 8:24 HEB: עֲצוּמִ֖ים וְעַם־ קְדֹשִֽׁים׃
NAS: mighty men and the holy people.
KJV: the mighty and the holy people.
INT: mighty people and the holy
קְדֹשִֽׁ
Hosea 11:12
HEB: אֵ֔ל וְעִם־ קְדוֹשִׁ֖ים נֶאֱמָֽן׃
NAS: Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
KJV: and is faithful with the saints.
INT: God against the Holy is faithful
קְדוֹשִׁ֖
After looking at a large number of uses of the phrase "holy people" in different versions of capitalization and Bibles. I come to the conclusion that in the OT, and in Daniel 8, it represents the Jews.
