Consider Answering This Question That Jesus Posed

August 2, 2015

In the midst of explaining a parable to the disciples, Jesus stopped and asked them a question:
“Do you understand these things?” (Mt. 13:52)

Now, rule number one in reading Scripture is when Jesus asks a question, you answer it. You don’t keep reading to see how the Apostles or disciples answered it. You stop, put down the Bible, and answer it yourself.

I have deliberately not provided any context to the question Jesus asks above (you can look it up later if you’d like). But for now just stay with this question and apply it to any or all of Scripture. Do you understand these things?

What does it mean to understand? The Greek word that is translated as “understand” is οἴδατε (oidate), which refers to seeing that becomes knowing, seeing and laying hold of something that is a gateway to grasping spiritual truth.

So the question remains: Do you understand these things?

One of the problems for those of us who have some familiarity with the Scriptures is that they are familiar. And while it is good that the Scriptures are well known to us, it is also a problem. A passage begins and we just say, “Oh yeah, that story” and we either tune out or fail to reflect deeply.

But Scripture is always more than just a story or the facts of a text. Even ordinary human acts or words are seldom merely what they seem to be on the surface.

Consider an example my Scripture teacher, Fr. Martin, once gave. You and I are at a gathering and we observe Smith enter the room and immediately go across the room and greet Jones warmly. And I say, “Wow, look at that!” And you say, “What’s the big deal? People shake hands all the time.” And then I reply, “Smith and Jones have been enemies for thirty years.” So there is a depth and a mystery to that simple act that mere observation does not supply. The act occurs at a specific moment in time, but it has a past and points to a future. It also has a depth that must be perceived and appreciated.

And this is what Jesus is calling for when he asks, Do you understand these things? Do you grasp these parables, these teachings, these accounts and stories from Scripture? Do you perceive them with a seeing and a hearing that lead to knowledge and are a gateway to grasping spiritual truth? Or are you just seeing the surface of the text, noting the event, and then moving on?

Further, our “understanding” of them is not a static thing, but a dynamic and growing reality. With each year that we hear the familiar stories and teachings of Scripture, our understanding can and should become deeper and richer.

The Latin Fathers of the Church had a saying that the Scriptures were Non nova, sed nove (not new things, but understood newly). In other words, though the stories and teachings do not change (non nova) our appreciation of them, our grasp and understanding of them is ever new; they are seen newly (nove), appreciated more deeply.

So, as you read the Scriptures, Jesus has a question for you, “Do you understand these things?” Are you just hearing and reading ancient words and events, or are you plumbing their depths? Where are your mind and heart as you perceive the Word of God? Do you ponder it in your heart?

It is not enough to know what something meant for the Apostles or the people of Jesus’ time, or some commentator. What does it mean for you, now? How have you experienced the truth that is announced? What are the implications of the text, teaching, or story for you? Do you see something new that you never saw before?

Do you understand these things?

Do you understand these things?

Only as if through a glass ... darkly.

A passage begins and we just say, “Oh yeah, that story” and we either tune out or fail to reflect deeply.

It's harder to skip or tune out when the Word is proclaimed to us.

The verse is Matthew 13:51. Also, the Greek word translated “understand” is συνκατε (synkate), literally “to put together”.

“Do you understand these things?”

To understand something, one has to observe it, then determine its cause. Then one can make a generalization about what one has observed. Then the generalization has to be integrated without contradiction into the sum total of current knowledge.

Thanks for the ping. Very instructional.

11. To what shall I compare this generation? (Matt 11:6)

Dear Jesus,

I would compare many of this generation to a fast growing infection which antibiotics, etc. are unable to stop. The are coming to this country with wicked beliefs, ideas, thoughts and actions, infecting our culture of values and respect for God with opposite values and we are powerless to stop them. Help us pleae, Oh Lord.

All of us need to answer that question and especially leadership from the County level all the way up through the Federal Agencies and three branches of government. Complete corruption, a fast-growing infection.

When He allowed me to put together 30/60/100 in His Parable with what Israel did in the wilderness, everything made so much more sense.. Even what Satan does in Revelation 13..

Hi!
When I was in college, I had several courses with lab practicals. You had to get everything just so, or the proctors would literally take it apart and you started from scratch. Could that ever get annoying! Just when you think you had it down pat- boom! Back to square one! Arrrrgh! But if you wanted to pass the course, you took it, and kept on trying. You just kept doing it, with your eyes on the prize- passing the course and getting through school.

One day one of the proctors explained the situation. Nobody's ever going to be 100% out there in the real world- so they demanded 110% of us in lab - figuratively, that is- so that each of us would become the best we could be.

My take on Jesus' statement is something like that. God knows better than anyone that we aren't perfect. Yet if we constantly strive to reach our own maximum potential in holiness, isn't that as perfect as we can be? Jesus is saying, strive for your best, always; your efforts are pleasing to God: seek first His Kingdom, and keep all your efforts toward Him in all you do... God bless you!

Well, my cable is gone, as I can no longer afford it. I do have a VCR and lots of old movies, so yesterday, I watched all three installments of Zeffirelli's, "Jesus of Nazareth."

I heard a lot of those questions yesterday. Funny, maybe because I hadn't seen it in awhile, or just because I wasn't feeling too well, I really didn't stop to ask myself anything. I watched as the tables were turned over; the Pharisees got told off; the Apostles moving from being incredulous to seeing the incredible!

All my life, I've loved listening to the stories my elders told. As I got older, I treasured them all the more, because I could see that, once the older ones in the family were gone, so would be the stories. Things about my parents and grandparents; the old country; most of all, the wisdom that came from hardship and family life.

Maybe I take God for granted. I know He won't pass away and leave me; His Word has been part of my life for as long as I can remember; I know He's never more than a thought or a prayer away. When I read Scripture, I forget sometimes that God is speaking to me about more than just my temporal problems. Maybe I've been so caught up in those, so much seeking for answers, that I haven't stopped to listen and think in terms of the eternal- at least not as much as I ought to...
