Fr. Jonathan Morris, the longtime Fox News contributor, was spat upon by some homo-revelers at the so-called Gay Pride Parade in New York a couple of days ago. If you think thats bad, just wait until you hear his reaction.
He is a Catholic priest. He takes the directive to “turn the other cheek” literally and humbly.
Really? Come on!
Why is it that I can never hear his videos?
He remains me so much of the wimp parish priest I used to have.
I saw the article about this further down. Turning the other cheek is fine, but along with that should be the admonishment to repent from his evil ways or risk damnation.
Very fine Priest, he may have at one time, commented on CNN as well before going to Fox, think I read that.
No. You miss how this directive is interpreted by Catholics. Catholics believe that when confronted with an insult by a hostile individual that the best response is to forsake vengeance and hatred of that individual even if the individual persists. It is believed that this is an act of love and if done in Jesus’ name it has more of a chance of leading the tormenter to righteousness by your example than vengeful action or words. It of course does not mean that a Catholic or others cannot protect himself from actual bodily harm. However Catholic teaching is full of examples where this form of “love” has resulted in peace and the saving of souls. You probably disagree but should understand the basis of Fr. Morris’s actions and statement.
Not according to what Jesus says.
Gospel Mt 5:43-48
Jesus said to his disciples: You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your heavenly Father, for he makes his sun rise on the bad and the good, and causes rain to fall on the just and the unjust. For if you love those who love you, what recompense will you have? Do not the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet your brothers only, what is unusual about that? Do not the pagans do the same? So be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Why are you posting this to me? I am not arguing against this priest’s turning of the cheek.
So speaking the Truth is not love and is vengeful? Show me the Catholic teaching that teaches that.
Christ also said “Repent! For the kingdom of God is at hand!”
And did John the Baptist not “love his enemies” when he told Herod that it was against God’s laws to marry Herodias? Sure, he got his head cut off for it, but was he wrong?
But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Yes...that would be a wonderful remedy for the crazed terrorist who smuggles in and detonates a dirty bomb in some American city...
Not retaliating against someone who spits at you is one thing...going on TV and defending their slimy actions is another...
We have a winner.
Off Topic - Why is there some who believe the consecration of Russia was never done? I am sorry for ot question, but it seems that most of the things I read in regards to ultra traditionalist always claim it wasn’t done, when Sr. Lucia said it was. Just wondering.
So speaking the Truth is not love and is vengeful?...

My screen name was chosen for this exact reason:
There is a heresy afoot which omits the indictment of the sinner. Jesus preached (against Bergoglios advice) Repent and believe the good news! whereas many, many so-called Christians preach only, Believe the good news, without warning sufficiently of the poison of sin.
The whole Who am I to judge? lie was designed in hell to permit a church that is permissive, soft and lazy and which excuses itself from the tough and dirty task of correcting the wayward, embraced by countless true and acclaimed saints.
Lets begin with the first martyr of the New Testament church, Stephen. Go read how he upbraided the Jews for their stubborn hard-heartedness. Paul the apostle lists Sodomy and fornication as sin which will be the cause of the loss of salvation. Paul spoke those words in love, and deep, deep concern for souls. Where are these voices today?
One other point is that true preaching draws PERSECUTION, persecution leaves victims, and victims lead others to salvation, as martyrs (witnesses to Christ Jesus our Lord) providing the most vivid clarity of the gospel of the CROSS that another can view (by the martyrs example).
The unmanly fear of persecution and desire to be accepted by the world is why the gospel has been perverted by omitting the need to preach against SIN, including in the sad example of Morris in the interview given on getting spit upon where he failed to mention the grave SIN and REBELLION at work against Christ and His Church.
True........but Father Morris basically said the sodomite WAS JUSTIFIED in spitting in his face, which is total crap. Father Morris is Church Nice personified. There’s a reason he’s on talk shows so much. But I used to have a parish priest almost identical to him. They will not speak out. Not one Catholic Archbishop was a talk show in the six months preceeding the Supreme Court decision. They were non-existent.
Your point is well taken. Fr. Morris did no wrong to deserve that treatment and he did give the impression that these two thugs were doing something justified. Initially thought he was joking or trying to make light of the situation but then again there might be more going on in this particular situation with this particular man. However the point of the original post was to explain the ideal Catholic interpretation of “turning the other cheek” when confronted by an unjustified malicious sinner. You don’t endorse the sin.
So, what’s the news here? I can’t figure it out either from your post or the crappy “news” site you differed to.
