Ghana Archbishop Makes 'Daring' Suggestion That 'Power of the Keys' Could Allow Remarriage

An archbishop from Ghana suggested that the Church might explore using “the power of the keys” to release spouses from their marital vows, in an interview with Aleteia.

“It is daring to say what I’m saying,” acknowledged Archbishop Charles Palmer-Buckle of Accra. But he suggested that the October meeting of the Synod of Bishops might explore the possibility that the Church could allow couples to remarry without an annulment. He did not specify how such a proposal could be reconciled with the Church’s teaching on the permanence of marriage, and conceded that the Church could not contradict that teaching.

Archbishop Palmer-Buckle said that African bishops must minister to many people who lived in polygamous relationships before accepting the faith. This creates special challenges for the Church, he said.

Carl Hoffman was on C-SPAN the other day, talking about his experiences in New Guinea. He has written a book about the case of Michael Rockefeller, who was eaten by cannibals, and stayed in the village where those cannibals lived (I think that generation has passed on). He stayed with a local man who has 3 wives, but is a Catholic.

Sounds like a contradiction to me.

I suppose the “power of the keys” could also excuse murder most foul, at least in the minds of some.

I remember ‘95 when Ireland finally passed a constitutional amendment finally making divorce a civil matter.
And “Mother Teresa” was there, fought it tooth-and-nail.
About the same time Princess Diana had finally figured out what a royal dildo her Prince Chuck was, and Teresa was there saying it was sad but for the best ....

So as far as the ‘Mother Church’—or at least this Albanian saint is concerned—the resolution of any matter all depends on who you are.

How is it that so many men who couldn't pass a test on the Baltimore Catechism have become bishops and Cardinals, all over the world?

Paul VI and JPII stand out as particularly bad, and reportedly Francis is appointing absolutely horrible priests as bishops, focusing his direct interventions on the Spanish-speaking world.

I think that the next Pope should start out by laicizing a bishop every couple of days, keeping it up until orthodoxy is ringing from every mountain and valley. Should take no more than a month even for the most dense.

It was the hardness of your hearts that allowed for this. But from the beginning, it was not always so.

Remarriage adultery will be OK if “the power of the keys” can also be used to rewrite Scripture in its favor. /sarc

Yes, because that's exactly how we want to present the papacy to the non-Catholic world. /s

“It is daring to say what I’m saying,”

Um, no....it is heretical to say what you're saying.

There is nothing in the documents of Vatican II that should have been harmful to the Church. There is also nothing that the Church couldn’t do perfectly well without.

The real harm was done by Paul VI and JPII, who both decided to appoint monsters and villains to the episcopate, and allow them to run riot. They made NO effort to appoint holy, orthodox, Catholic men.

On that point we will continue to disagree. If Paul VI was capable of appointing “monsters and villains” to the episcopate, why should anyone believe that he wouldn’t also promote a robber council?

I don’t think he ever set out to appoint villains. The villains run the entire process. The Pope is in prison.

And there’s no evidence that Vatican II was a “robbers’ council.” It was a legitimate council. It was just useless and pointless, and hijacked by villains.

I feel compelled to say that the Catholic Church is a shipwreck, a shambles, a tumble-down, stinking heap. I don’t see the evidence that the Catholic Church has ceased to be the true Church, or that Pope Bergoglio is not the Pope. He was lawfully elected, and is diligently punishing the Church for our many sins.

Quite "daring" indeed. "Be not deceived, God is not mocked."

Better send up a few Ave's for Archbishop Palmer-Buckle.

“...At the close of Vatican II, the bishops asked Council Secretary Archbishop Felici for that which the theologians call the “theological note” of the Council; that is, the doctrinal “weight” of Vatican II’s teachings. Felici replied: “We have to distinguish according to the schemas and the chapters those which have already been the subject of dogmatic definitions in the past; as for the decelerations which have a novel character, we have to make reservations.”...”
