If Freepers spent less time slamming each other’s religion and more time focused on the politics the site is about, perhaps there could be some real planning and change.

Chickensoup, does this actually include you slamming others' religious expressions toward other religions? (Yes, CS, if you label others as "religious slammers" you are indeed engaging in religious slamming)

Perhaps if didn't really wish to discuss religion at all on FR ... bypassing these threads could help you devote additional time toward "some real planning and change"

Oh, and BTW, I'd like to encourage you to post your same comments on the next DOZEN FR threads about Islam...

You see, you can tell a given posters' REAL commitment to "let's not slam another religion" principles by how willing they are to post the above sentiments on an FR Islam and/or Radical Islam thread.

The fact that these kinds of posts never seem to raise their head on Islamic threads either shows...
...(a) a lack of consistent application to such principles -- otherwise known as basic religious hypocrisy,
...OR (b) they are simply ruses to put the focus of the thread upon something OTHER than the thread content...
...OR (c) fill in the blank...

I wanted to wait and see a little of the responses to this thread before I posted my opinion on this.

Can you say h-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-i-c-a-l?

thanks for posting your comment! As an observer of the religious forum for many years, I can cite h-y-p-o-c-r-i-c-y throughout this entire website.

So tell me, who should I follow if I choose a church? The Catholics? The Baptists? The evil Mormons? The Protestants? The Methodists? Or the myriad of other religions out there?

Come on Colofornian, WHICH CHURCH SHOULD I JOIN and what makes it better than any of the others????????

______________

I speak up about Islam which is a politico-religious entity. After almost 17 years here, I guess I am tired of the enmity that some of the religious posters have, and have just asked Jim about a way to avoid the religion thread. I seem to recall that in the past we could custom the stream

If you don’t like my comment, ignore it, however there are a number of people who have stepped back at FR and one of the big reasons is the level of insults and hate on the religion threads against others of similar faiths and denominations.

It is an area that I don’t care for the level of anger, insults and rudeness and drama. Your response is a good example of the level of defensiveness and lashing out that I am tired of.

Throughout the religion forum -- on various threads -- yes, I've seen some insults, putdowns, making it personal, etc.

But I've probably ALSO observed -- in fact, probably more often -- are accusations like yours...generic accusations...not pointing to ANY specific post as being particularly...
..."hateful"
..."insulting"
..."rude"
..."anger-based"
...(overly)"dramatic"

IoW...if this were some "trial" you'd be objected to for failure to establish a foundation. So...

Just because ALL of the above happens in the religion forum, so what? It doesn't happen on every religious thread

Secondly, your assessment occurs on other FR areas as well...What? Are you going to suggest those be "ghettoized" in some way, too?

Thirdly, to attribute "anger" as a motivation on these forums is basically guilty of superimposing motivations where NONE is usually known...IOW...it's mind-reading...so, haven't you violated basic forum rules by engaging in mind-reading? And how is superimposing motivations upon almost perfect strangers supposedly so "unifying"???

What I don't understand...
...is without identifying ANY specific phrase re: ANY specific post on this thread...
...you've accused some nameless posters here (or in other RF threads)...
...of engaging in...
..."hate"
..."insults"
..."rudeness"
..."drama"
...exhibiting "anger"

Tell us: How is it that your generic accusations such as these isn't part of what you label as "lashing out"...???

How is it that YOU are able to generically lash out with the above accusations toward nameless posters?

But you find it somehow reprehensible for anybody else to "lash out?"

Oh, do tell us: Where do we go to get issued the "free to lash out" license that you seem to carry about as a proud card-carrying member?

(Oh...and BTW...if you were to ACTUALLY READ some specific posts on this thread -- before you posted -- you will actually see ... on Post #14...that I actually found it quite ironic that the NY Daily News was highlighting this particular issue as a "negative" one )...

IoW, I gave reason why with this thread that there was an actually a reason to critique the NY Daily News for the topic they went after the JWs for...

But, of course, in your rush to generic judgment and to smear ALL posts on this thread...at least thru post #17 ... as somehow religiously "problematic" with you, you didn't seem to catch that...now did you?)

Well, thanks for the question.

When I've encountered this type of question in the past, I had to assume the person asking it was genuinely sincere.

(Alas, some haven't been in the past...knowing FULL WELL they NEVER had ANY intention of joining ANY church...they just seemed "hardened" versus ALL Christian churches or so-called 'Christian' churches )

But again, I will assume that doesn't include you.

When Jesus Christ of Nazareth approached His disciples, He said, "Come follow ME."

Christian discipleship then, foremost, is personal. A personal relationship with Him.

Even in baptism, the apostle Paul referenced in Romans 6 that we are baptized into a PERSON (Jesus) -- not baptized into a CHURCH body... (See Romans 6:1-4)

So before we even discuss church bodies, do you have any objections to following Jesus Christ Himself?

Maybe the other churches should have a cartoon threating the parents with death if they don`t make their children behave.

JWs used to be called Russellites until one of their End of the World predictions didn’t turn out as expected so they rebranded themselves and hoped nobody noticed.

I respect all faiths but I view JW as a cult. My ex wife and I were married Catholic. She was a nurse who worked at various hospitals in the greater Baltimore area. She worked at Sinai Hospital in Northwest Balt. She started coming home talking bizarre things. She met a black JW and had an affair with him and got pregnant. She is still married to the turd to this day. I have no love for JW.

In other words, you can't make any determination whatsoever can you but yet you still criticize........

Thanks but no thanks.......

Sorry...but when you're more (at least superficially) interested in the "What" of these "WHATsoevers" than the WHO (Jesus Christ)...I think that answers the question for me about a willingness -- or unwillingness -- to follow Him.

IoW...If the horizontal relationships are going to trump the vertical relationship with Christ, hey, that's somebody talkin' "religion" ... not relating to/with Jesus Christ.
