Ping!
Napoleon was also a double dealer. After there was an agreement on the Concordat (which dealt with issues alike the selection of Bishops and Gallicanism), he published it with an appendix that was not part of the original document that contradicted the negotiated agreement.
The book Pope Pius VII by TAN Books is an exceptional book on the subject. One memorable line from it reminds me of today’s GOPe. In reference to the French aristocracy, Prof. Anderson wrote that they “remembered everything and learned nothing.”
Also note the the picture that Napoleon changed the ceremony. Traditionally the ranking cleric places the crown on the new sovereigns head. In this case, Napoleon just took it for himself and placing it on his own head.
“He was clearly unfamiliar with Josephuss Antiquities of the Jews which mentions Jesus.”
Jesus is mentioned in Josephus, but that section was at least altered later by others, so it is impossible to know exactly what Josephus originally wrote.
It’s unfortunate that some felt the need to go back and edit these documents, because we might have had a great piece of evidence, but now it will always be under a cloud.
I myself, though Catholic, am apparently descended from a Hugenot who landed in Boston a century or so earlier.
I believe that Wellington’s Army had more to do with Napoleon’s demise, and the fact that he chose his ground very carefully which preserved his Army for the final clash.
On a side note, a surprisingly large number of notable leaders within Western Civilization, including Churchill and Obama; have contemplated conversion to Islam at one time or another. I believe that the doctrine of Islam that requires the faithful to submit to the judgment and decisions of the ruler is what they found to be so attractive. What a wonderful world it would be, if only everyone would listen to me.
The Pope is a good man....but ignorant..”
Tradition?
“During Napoleons Egyptian campaign he seriously considered adopting the Muslim faith...”
A violent, misoginist megolmaniac considered adopting Islam? Perish the thought.
And here I thought an externally cold winter brought Napoleon to his knees. So much for history books.
Romans 1: 21For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.
Suggestion, give God credit for everything good for no man is good.
Luke 18:19 and Mark 10:18 New Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition (NRSVCE)
18 Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.
