Guest commentary: Muslims, Mormons and Obama, one might think they would do better together
The Contra Costa Times News ^ | November 22, 2014 | Robert A. Rees

A recent Gallup poll reflecting President Barack Obama's approval rating among American religious groups revealed that the president's highest rating was among Muslims (72 percent) and the lowest among Mormons (18 percent). That's an enormous difference between two groups that actually have a lot in common. What explains such radically divergent views?

According to Mormon political analyst Quin Monson, the explanation for Obama's low ranking among Mormons has to do with party affiliation: "It's not surprising, given the fact Mormons are overwhelmingly Republican. There aren't very many Mormon Democrats, and that explains it."

That surely is not the whole explanation. While it is true that Mormons identify predominantly as Republican (65 percent) and that Utah votes Republican to a higher degree than any other state (72 percent in the last two presidential elections), such a low estimation of the president must be attributable to other factors as well. One of those is the influence on certain segments of Mormon culture by a more extreme right-wing ideology, one identified with and influenced by Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sara Palin, the John Birch Society and the Tea Party.

It is from such sources that one hears the most radical views of and negative sentiments toward the president -- that Obama is non-Christian (and most likely Muslim), that he's a Marxist or Communist, that he is gay, that he identifies with the Muslim Brotherhood, that he is undermining the Constitution, etc.

It is difficult to know the extent to which such sentiment influences the hearts and minds of Mormons, but I suspect that an independent study would reveal that it is not insignificant.

Recently a college-educated Mormon friend wrote the following: "Obama wants a socialist state, cradle to grave....

There is no question that Obama is a Muslim.

His father was a Muslim, which makes him a Muslim.

His step-father was a Muslim, which also makes him a Muslim.

He went to school in Indonesia as a Muslim.

There is no evidence whatever that he was ever baptized, nor is there any evidence that he has ever been a Christian.

And as Obama has said, and has proven again and again, his sympathies are with the Muslims, while he hates Christians.

There is no doubt about it. None.

''There aren't very many Mormon Democrats, and that explains it.'' I guess Harry Reid doesn't count!

There aren’t very many Mormon Democrats,
_____________________________________________

Probably more than he realizes...

Willard boasted during pause in a radio interview in Idaho, Aug 2007 that there were lots and being a Mormon bishop and a former Democrat himself would know..

Plus hes a good buddy and religious blood brother to the top Mormon Democrat himself, Harry Reid..

That M also stands for Mohammad...

Joey Smith, the criminal who invented Mormon ism wanted to be “the 2nd Mohammad” and “Joseph Smith or the sword”

He was so good at copying his idol, he was known as the American Mohammad..

Vs. the Moslem s who are under the influence of the moderate and gentle ( or were) Osama bin Laden, Blind Sheikh, Mullah Omar, Jehadi John, Louis Farakhan, ISIS, etc., etc.

Sure. The Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints (to give the Mormons their full designation) is out there waging jihad on all other sects, beheading or putting under bondage all those who do not wholeheartedly accept their teachings?

I don’t think so. Whether anybody may think that Mormons are better Christians or not (if some even agree Mormons ARE Christians), they are certainly more well-disposed to their neighbors than the vast majority of the practitioners of the concepts of Islam.

Typically, any Muslim is in vastly more danger from his fellow Muslims, than ever they may be from non-Muslims. Muslims are particularly sensitive to the possibility of “apostasy” than almost any other religion (if Islam is, in fact, a religion and not simply a death cult), and it is treated most severely and harshly, sometimes based on no more than suspicions from another, who, in a more reasonable culture, would be adjudged to be clinically insane.

Actually, he was a pretty poor imitator. Mo was a very successful warlord. Joe was not. He started at least two wars and lost them both.

I find it difficult to generalize about people, no matter what faith they are. I can better generalize about "children," "teenagers," "spoiled brats," "old geezers" and other such groupings but people within a faith, culture or country are pretty hard to peg.

We lived in the Saudi Arabia for five years and THAT is where I picked up my habit of DAILY MASS, with encouragement from my Muslim boss. Daily Mass was three minutes from our office and it was at 9:00 A.M. every day and I made up the 20 minutes I missed at my lunch hour.
The one who was against it was my Indian Catholic co-worker. My Saudi boss told my co-worker that: "God is number One. There is always time for God. CloudMountain can go to pray whenever she wants." So I did, every morning. Our "weekends" were Thursdays and Fridays.

BTW: Men of the cloth aren't officially allowed in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia but they are there...so the Saudi government just calls them "special teachers," allows them to live and work there and everyone wins.

The Saudis never intend to separate people from God, no matter what any press says. I was there and lived it.

However, the Syrian leadership is different. Why, I don't know. THEY are Arabs and Muslims too and have no "Mecca" to protect. Who knows WHY they are such aholes and the Saudis aren't.

... the president's highest rating was among Muslims (72 percent)...

Muslims overwhelmingly support* a Sunni Muslim president. Go figure.

*The other 28% were Shi'ite Muslims

LOL! :)

Liberals live in a fantasy world where they’re all moderates and anyone who disagrees with them is an extremist.
