The bishops of the United States have approved publication of the first ever official English translation of the ritual book, “Exorcisms and Related Supplications.”

The proposal passed by 179 votes to 5 Tuesday. The translation now needs a "recognitio" of the Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments.

Revised after the Second Vatican Council, the exorcism ritual was promulgated in Latin in 1999 with an amended version in 2004. According to the Committee for Divine Worship, the main part of this book is the rite of major exorcism and includes an introduction outlining criteria for its use, which is always the decision of the bishop alone. While this text affirms the reality of evil in the world, it even more so affirms the sovereignty of Christ to overcome any and all evil.

Some of the changes in the new translation seem minor, such as using the spelling Zion rather than Sion. The phrase "rise up to help me" was altered to "arise in my defense."

One exorcist, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the nature of his work, said that having the rite in English "will be a nice tool for those of us whose Latin is not up to snuff.I think many exorcists will stick with the Latin translation," he added. "There is some belief among exorcists that the Latin prayers are more effective in driving out demons."

Converting the rite of exorcism to the vernacular is basically a way of saying, “We don’t believe in demons, so we don’t believe in exorcism, just in mollifying people who believe that demons exist.”

This is based on the idea that ignoring evil will overcome it. Or worse, that good and evil are subjective.

It still amazes me how so many revisions, innovations, abuses, etc. are referenced back to the Second Vatican Council. It seems to be the greatest milestone in Church history.

The bishops need to practice both the new exorcism rite and the old exorcism rite on Uncle Cardinal Teddy McCarrick; he's retired and expendable. I'll bet the farm that only the latter will be effective.

What is the possible point of doing an exorcism in the vernacular? The prayers address the demons directly (as well as God). Are they in English that so that the non-Latin-speaking demons will feel fully included in the prayers of the community? /s /s /s

Why do you think that? Christ and the Apostles didn’t use Latin when they cast out demons, and they were still effective.

Based on my childhood experience of parochial school in the '70s, the vernacular presents too great a temptation for some priests to ad lib all but the most solemn prayers.

The vernacular, a traveling mic, and a narcissistic priest . . . truly an unholy trinity.

The rite could be in any language; demons understand them all just fine. The only reason for putting it the vernacular is so laypeople present can understand it. Why would anyone think they need to understand it? Only if they don't really believe there's anyone else listening!

As I explained above, the prayers aren't addressing people and aren't there to teach people. They're directed to God, and in some cases directly imprecating the demons in God's name -- in at least one case, at some length. (Several pages worth.) Real demons understand them just fine as they are.
