US Bishops Struggle Under Francis' Pontificate

U.S. Roman Catholic bishops are gathering at a moment of turbulence for them and the American church, as Pope Francis moves toward crafting new policies for carrying out his mission of mercy - a prospect that has conservative Catholics and some bishops in an uproar.

The assembly, which starts Monday in Baltimore, comes less than a month after Francis ended a dramatic Vatican meeting on how the church can more compassionately minister to Catholic families.

The gathering in Rome was only a prelude to a larger meeting next year which will more concretely advise Francis on church practice. Still, the open debate at the event, and the back and forth among bishops over welcoming gays and divorced Catholics who remarry, prompted stunning criticism from some U.S. bishops.

He’s not looking all that good to me, either.

However, he may be attractive to the younger Catholics.

The Pope and Obama are very similar. You don’t know if their actions come from stupidity and ignorance, arrogance and isolation, or a genuine desire to do harm.

In the case of Obama, I’d say it’s all three, with an emphasis on the last. In the case of the Pope, I’d say it’s a combination of ignorance and arrogance. He somehow thinks he knows better than the Church of two millennia.

US bishops are certainly struggling. There are a lot of go along to get along guys, such as Dolan, but some of the many new good ones are either being openly attacked from Rome or are uncertain about how to proceed.

Terrible situation. The Church will not fail or fall, because there have been worse situations in the past and everything has worked out. But it’s going to be very difficult for many people in the near future.

As Cardinal Francis George said..."I will die in my bed....my predecessor will die in prison, and his predecessor will die a martyr".

I thought it would be coming from the culture, NOT the Church itself. PRAY.

Recheck that quote. I think Cardinal George must have said “successor” and not “predecessor.”

Many churchmen, and it appears that Pope Francis is one of them, are "corrupted by compassion." In their haste to make things easy for someone, they do things that make the situation worse. Communion for those in invalid marriages is a current example. In his compassion, Pope Francis wants to allow them to receive Communion. However, for someone in the state of mortal sin to receive Communion only makes the sin worse. Promoting that is not "compassionate." The only really compassionate answer is to tell them to get out of that sinful situation. Get married if that's possible; separate if it isn't. In the case of people engaged in sodomy, the only answer is to quit. Confirming them in their sin is not being compassionate.

I’m no longer on the fence about this Pope. He’s a left winger and bad for the church. John XXIII destroyed the rituals of the church but mostly kept the teachings. This guy is destroying the teachings. And of course people will say “his heart is in the right place” and thus dismiss how he’s sowing confusion, discontent, and fear within the church while making the enemies of the church and the sinners all happy.

Message…New Liberal/progressive/communist pope wants to carry out a “mission of mercy”, and the conservatives are in an uproar.

Nooooo. There’s no bias there!

I think you have John XXIII mixed up with Paul VI.

I might. John XXIII convened Vatican II but it ended under Paul IV. Before my time so I don’t know which Pope really ran it for real.

US bishops still give “abortion is the most sacred belief of catholic faith” Pelosi communion.

She was given communion by a bishop? I don’t doubt it, but who?

John XXIII died in 1963, after the first session. The Council ended in 1965. The Novus Ordo Missae went into effect in 1969. The Council suggested some modification of the liturgy. It mandated NOTHING remotely like the Novus Ordo.

Not so often mentioned, and also not mandated by the Council, was the Catechetical Collapse. This occurred in the U.S. in 1963-66. It occurred in my school in 1965.

Very likely she has. Wuerl would give her Communion, no question. And he suspended a priest for refusing Communion to a proclaimed lesbian Buddhist.

The issue is that Cardinal Wuerl has been adamant that pro-abortion politicians, and lesbians, must be given Communion. He allowed “gay Masses” or “Dignity Masses” to continue in Pittsburgh for NINE YEARS after Rome mandated that they must be stopped.

Wuerl is absolutely clear that public sinners of all kinds MUST be given Communion—pro-abortion people, sodomites, and adulterers.
