He attended the 7:30 a.m. Mass every Sunday at his parish, St. John Chrysostom in West Roxbury, smaller and folksier than some of the neighboring parishes...

“The Meninos are definitely a part of the fabric of this parish family,” said the Rev. John J. Connolly Jr., pastor of St. John Chrysostom and scheduled to be the main celebrant at Menino’s funeral Mass..

he confronted protests from conservative Catholics when Catholic Charities Greater Boston honored him, an event Cardinal Sean P. O’Malley declined to attend because of Menino’s support for abortion rights and gay marriage.

“What moves me most about being a Christian is what Jesus taught us about being religious,” Menino said in his speech that night. “He did not give priority to piety. He didn’t make holiness the big thing. And he did not tell us to go around talking up God, either.”..

Menino and O’Malley patched things up and eventually developed a strong relationship....http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2014/11/03/for-thomas-menino-faith-proved-bedrock-life-private-and-public/pKC3ylYibQQGLWpuznj0EN/story.html?p1=Article_InThisSection_Bottom

ABORTION/MURDER

► Since an abortive run for Congress in 1992 while still a City Councilor, Menino has supported legal abortion and the public funding of abortion. In his first campaign for Mayor in 1993, he indicated that he would continue the practice of taxpayer finance abortions at Boston City Hospital.

► In January 1994, Thomas Menino became the first Boston Mayor to appoint the members of the Boston School Committee. Among his initial appointees was Dr. Elizabeth Reilinger, President and CEO of Crittenton Hastings House, then a major Massachusetts abortuary, which performed over 4000 abortions per year. Since 1998, Dr. Reilinger has been the Chairwoman of the School Committee. Another original appointee by Mayor Menino was the pro-abortion left-wing activist Felix Arroyo, now a member of the Boston City Council.

FORNICATION and SODOMY

► From 1996 to 1998, Mayor Menino lobbied the Massachusetts Legislature to pass a home rule petition which would allow the Boston City Council to enact a domestic partners ordinance.

► In August, 1998, when Acting Governor A. Paul Cellucci vetoed the measure, Mayor Menino, against the advice of his own corporation counsel, arbitrarily and unlawfully instituted a domestic partners benefits program for municipal employees by executive order. This order was challenged in Suffolk County Superior Court by the American Center for Law and Justice and the Catholic Action League of Massachusetts.

► On July 8, 1999, the Supreme Judicial Court of the Commonwealth, in a unanimous decision written by then-Associate Justice Margaret Marshall, overturned the executive order in Connors vs. the City of Boston.

► On May 17, 2004, the first day that same-gender marriage ceremonies could be legally performed in the Commonwealth, Mayor Menino, a supporter of same-sex marriage, personally welcomed homosexual and lesbian couples to Boston City Hall amid much fanfare and media attention.

► Since 1994, Mayor Menino has boycotted Boston's Saint Patrick's Day Parade because the organizers have refused to allow a homosexual group to march in the parade. Mayor Menino has also in the past forbidden Boston Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical technicians from marching in the parade, describing it as "a discriminatory event."

► Under Mayor Menino's appointed School Committee, the Boston School Department has embraced such homosexual programs as the Safe School Initiative and Gay/Straight Alliances, which teach that homosexual relationships ought to be affirmed.

► In June of each year, Mayor Menino leads Boston's Gay Pride Parade, welcomes marchers to Boston, and allows Boston Police officers, in uniform, to march in the parade.

► Each year in June, Mayor Menino allows the pink triangle homosexual flag to be flown over Boston City Hall Plaza as part of Gay Pride celebrations, often personally participating in the flag raising ceremony.

► Each year during Gay Pride Week, Mayor Menino sponsors a gay prom for teenagers at Boston City Hall, where condoms have been distributed.

► Mayor Menino is a supporter of both gay rights and transgendered rights, whereby sexual orientation and identity are included in the protected categories of civil rights legislation.

► Mayor Menino has maintained at public expense a gay and lesbian liaison office at Boston City Hall.

ISLAM

► While the story of the building of the Roxbury mosque may not be worthy of a Hollywood epic, it does contain the stuff of a good television drama:..Mayor Menino...approved the sale of city-owned land to the mosque [the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC)], with Abdurahman Alamoudi being a founding member (jailed for 23 years in 2004 for material support of Islamist terrorism and money laundering), and Muslim Brotherhood's Yusef al-Qaradawi being a major influence) for the bargain basement — and still controversial — price of $175,000, plus the promise of in-kind services, including upkeep of nearby parks. The predictable uproar that arose in the wake of not only selling land well below market rates, but also selling it to a religious institution in contravention of the supposed separation of church and state, was supposed to be muffled by making the complex available for community use. But oops — that never happened.

Originally intended to minister to an urban congregation of African-American Muslims, the mosque project was turned over by the city, with no fanfare and little notice, to the control of suburban-based Muslims of largely Saudi Arabian heritage: the Islamic Society of Boston (ISB), which more recently became the Muslim American Society of Boston (MAS-Boston). Cardinal Sean O’Malley, Archbishop of Boston, is presiding.

Can. 1184 §1 Church funeral rites are to be denied to the following, unless they gave some signs of repentance before death:

1 notorious apostates, heretics and schismatics;

2 those who for anti-christian motives chose that their bodies be cremated;

3 other manifest sinners to whom a Church funeral could not be granted without public scandal to the faithful.

This is a real crisis in the Catholic Church. Allowing this vile pro abortion public official a Catholic burial is confusing and disheartening to the faithful.In 1985 Cardinal O’Connor would not allow a Catholic burial for a murdered Mafia chief. The hierarchy has to show its mettle and do their job.

I understand. Menino's mosque

Meanwhile Rome continues to count, treat and honor proabortion, prosodomote promuslim politicians with a church funeral with its inferences of gaining eternal life through the character-affirming eulogy and intercession of the church, as they did for comrades Ted Kennedy and Chavez, and the multitudes that support and follow them.

Statement of Mayor Thomas M. Menino in Response to MA Supreme Court Decision requiring recognition of same-sex marriage:

“Today is a great day for all of our people. Marriage equality first played out right here in Boston and like the many firsts Boston has championed it has proven to be the right path forward for a more open, inclusive America..." - http://www.cityofboston.gov/news/default.aspx?id=6197

1 notorious apostates, heretics and schismatics;

2 those who for anti-christian motives chose that their bodies be cremated;

3 other manifest sinners to whom a Church funeral could not be granted without public scandal to the faithful.

Yet §2 of it states, "If any doubt occurs, the local ordinary is to be consulted, and his judgment must be followed." Unless overruled, but it was not.

And Canon lawyer Edward Peters offers a rule of thumb for the interpretation of Canon 915, which stipulates that the Eucharist should not be administered to those who have been excommunicated “and others who obstinately persist in manifest grave sin.”

Unless a substantial majority of the community in question (I’m assuming them to be adults, reasonably aware of Catholic life around them, etc.) knows at the time why a given individual is being denied holy Communion, that’s a pretty good sign that Canon 915 has not been satisfied, and that Canon 912 (and some others norms) has been violated. - http://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/otn.cfm?id=897

And as also said in another thread, judging Rome as failing to uphold Truth makes popes and prelates - whom RCs insist we must look to for determination of Truth rather than our objective interpretation - subject to interpretation by laymen, the very thing RCs attack.

And canon law can be changed. And your interpretation would also contradicts that of cardinals as Wuerl:

I stand with the great majority of American bishops and bishops around the world in saying this canon [Canon 915] was never intended to be used this way.'' -- http://www.canonlaw.info/2009/03/abps-wuerl-c-916-burke-cc-915-916-on.html

Even the pope can be indicted under your premise, as Teddy K wrote to the pope, delivered by Pres. Obama, and the pope wrote back (through a senior Vatican official), out of which Cardinal McCarrick read, in which there was neither any evident penitence by the former or censure from the latter. Instead Kennedy insolently asserted he “never failed to believe and respect the fundamental teachings” of his church, and tried to be a faithful Catholic, etc..

The closest thing we get to any kind of contrition is the ambiguous, “I know that I have been an imperfect human being, but with the help of my faith, I have tried to right my path,” before he goes on to to defend his wonderful works, including fighting discrimination. Not a word of remorse about supporting abortion or promoting homosexual rights - which were part of his fight against discrimination, or promoting indolence and a welfare state.

And all we have from the papal response is no chastisement, but the pope expressing that, "he is particularly grateful for your promise of prayers for him and for the needs of the universal Church," and "invokes upon you the consolation and peace promised by the Risen Savior, and “cordially imparts his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of wisdom, comfort and strength in the Lord.” (http://www.thebostonpilot.com/articleprint.asp?id=10800/)

No surprise O'Malley presided -- just like at Fat Ted's planting.

Can. 1184 §1 Church funeral rites are to be denied to the following, unless they gave some signs of repentance before death:

1° notorious apostates, heretics and schismatics;

2° those who for anti-christian motives chose that their bodies be cremated;

3° other manifest sinners to whom a Church funeral could not be granted without public scandal to the faithful.

And, from USCCB guidelines for Catholics in Political Life:

"The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honor those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honors or platforms which would suggest support for their actions."

Well look at that -- O'Malley and a die-hard pro-abort.

O'Malley also made a big public show of passing communion through the slats of the US-Mexican border fence (after first searching out a location that even has a fence) -- An act of sacrilege -- "Indeed deliberate and notable irreverence towards the Holy Eucharist is reputed the worst of all sacrileges."

a church funeral with its inferences of gaining eternal life through the character-affirming eulogy

Nobody gets to heaven because they have a Catholic funeral after they die. The point of a funeral Mass is to pray for the person's soul, but prayers for the dead are only efficacious if they make it to purgatory.

And, strictly speaking, eulogies are not supposed to be given during the Mass itself.

To reiterate something I've said elsewhere....

In my experience, Catholics hold only one solitary belief to be crucial to salvation - kissing the Pope's ring. Ultimately, every other belief and practice is negotiable for them. IMO nothing else explains why Trinitarian pro-life Protestants are officially anathemized, while atheistic pro-abort Democrat Catholics can receive communion wafers from popes and funeral masses from cardinals.

Wow. Must the ring be attached to the pope's finger or can it be passed around like the Stanley Cup?

These apostate bishops who don't hold true to the Fidei Depositum are going to have a very special conversation with God someday.

If the local ordinary seriously believes that publicly honoring notorious pro-aborts and perverts and confusing the faithful in regard to the nature of such evils is acceptable to God, then he must also fall into the category of “notorious apostates, heretics and schismatics”.

It is interesting to compare the 1983 code (#1184) to the 1917 code (#1240):

“Unless they have given signs of repentance before death, the following are deprived of ecclesiastical burial:

1. Notorious apostates from the Christian faith and persons who notoriously belonged to heretical or schismatical sect, or to the Masonic sect, or to other societies of the same kind;

2. Persons excommunicated and interdicted after a condemnatory or declaratory sentence;

3. Those who have deliberately killed themselves;

4. Those who died in a duel or from wounds received in a duel;

5. Those who ordered their body to be cremated;

6. Other public and manifest sinners”
