Corruption is like bad breath, says Pope Francis, it is hard for the one who has it to realize it; others realize it and have to tell him.
In an address to a delegation of the International Association of Penal Law this morning, Francis commented on a variety of troubling international legal issues, including the widespread problem of corruption, which he called a greater evil than sin.

Aren’t they in the same general category?
Isn’t anything that could be described as “corruption” a sin?
Generally theft, I suppose, but it could also include bearing false witness, lust, sloth, etc.
I don’t get this pope at all, I feel like I don’t understand a thing he says.
Corruption is vested as either greed or vanity. Those are sins. As such, corruption is a subset of sin. Sin is missing the mark of God’s perfect plan.
LOL
How can sin be worse than sin?
I do wish I were his communications czar. He makes a dozen bumbles a day that a good editor could squelch. I would remind him daily of the First Rule of Good Communication: Never pass by a brilliant opportunity to keep your mouth shut."
Everywhere I go I'm asked if I think the university stifles writers. My opinion is that they don't stifle enough of them." --- Flannery O'Connor
Frances is definitely not an intellectual giant.
This Pope tells us homosexuals are ok and now this. The Catholic Church is in big trouble.
Corruption is Sin. Sin is Corruption. Maybe Pope Francis said something that got translated poorly?
It’s like saying sloth is worse than laziness.
Unexpectedly.
Almost certainly, the words of Pope Francis sounded better, properly contextualized in their original language. The translator (or interpreter) obviously missed some subtlety in the original Italian.
Note the use of the word “evil,” a term broader than sin, including physical, moral, and metaphysical maladies, according to Catholic Encyclopedia. Perhaps the pope identifies corruption not only as sin but also as a broader evil.
And by the way, “All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that is not deadly.” (1 John 5:17) Saint John clearly implies that some sins are worse than others.
I thought what he said made sense.
This idiot pope just doesn’t know when to stop digging.
How long before climate change is worse than sin?
“Maybe Pope Francis said something that got translated poorly?”
He seems to say those things on a daily basis.
Do we need a new translator... or a new pope?
“I thought what he said made sense.”
I agree, but it would have been much clearer had he just said corruption is a sin. He’s a human being, and for all of us our opinions are shaped in part by our experiences. Corruption has hurt a lot of people around the world.
There's such a thing as an ongoing, almost institutionalized or culturally-embedded, socially-sponsored sin, vs. the random individual failing. The individual failing in much easier to repent of, easier to forgive, even easier to eradicate, than the pattern of sin embedded in, and protected by the media, academia, the legal system, etc. etc.
An institution, however imperfect, which calls sin "sin" is far, far less corrupt than an institution that calls sin "Pride" and says "Let's have a parade."
