‘7th Heaven’ Dad Stephen Collins and the Christian Right’s Real Morality Tale (
The Daily Beast ^ | 10/8/14 | Amanda Marcotte

A mere month after releasing the security video footage showing Ray Rice committing a horrific act of domestic violence, TMZ has outed another celebrity who would rather keep his abusive behavior secret. The tabloid website released the purported audio of Stephen Collins, a long-time actor most famous for his role as the pastor-dad on the WB show 7th Heaven, confessing to his wife during therapy his repeated sexual abuse of underage girls. The NYPD is investigating and at least one woman, the daughter of his first wife, is coming forward with accusations.

While it’s always alarming to hear about any child abuse allegations, this case has particular resonance because of Collins’s most famous role, that of Rev. Eric Camden, the Christian patriarch ruling over a brood of seven children with his wife Annie. The show was both inexplicably popular—running for over 10 years—and notorious for its conservative tone. Much of the series was turned over to moralistic preaching about the evils of premarital sex. The conservative Christian organization Parents Television Council routinely cited 7th Heaven as one of its favorite shows on TV, calling it “one of the most wholesome and inoffensive programs on television.”

More from feminist Amanda Marcotte (who wrote on babies: ""I don’t particularly like babies. They are loud and smelly and, above all other things, demanding. No matter how much free day care you throw at women, babies are still time-sucking monsters with their constant neediness.” http://newsbusters.org/blogs/kristine-marsh/2014/03/18/marcotte-compares-abortion-cavity-removal-calls-babies-time-sucking-)

Apparently she also just wrote an article in favor of teen sexting:

"Maybe Sexting Is How Teenagers Will Learn About Consent" http://www.slate.com/blogs/xx_factor/2014/10/07/sexting_study_finds_that_teenagers_are_all_sexting.html

And, she just wrote about sexist atheists. She concluded with this line:

"If atheists believed in the afterlife, they would have to assume that Simone de Beauvoir and Elizabeth Cady Stanton are looking down upon us in horror, wondering how the good name of atheism has been so poisoned by rampant sexism. But since they are no longer around to judge us, it’s up to living atheists to strive to be more than a bunch of people who simply don’t believe in God, but stand up to irrationality in all its forms, including sexism."

http://www.salon.com/2014/10/03/new_atheisms_troubling_misogyny_the_pompous_sexism_of_richard_dawkins_and_sam_harris_partner/

Interesting paragraph for an atheist to conclude with. She apparently can't resist at least acknowledging that there is a Heaven.

He was an actor that simply read lines. Anything he did or didn’t do had nothing to do with the character he played. But the left will smear by “association” anyway.

So Marcotte is somehow blaming this organization for the at the time unknown private behavior of the actor? That's spelled C-H-E-A-P S-H-O-T.

Exactly. Marcotte is trying to blur the distinction between the man's fictional role and his real-life behavior, and trying to smear Christians in general for the latter.

if there’s no absolutes how can anyone argue irrationality is wrong? if this is all there is who is anyone to stop anyone else living how they want? rationally or irrationally?

I guess we can call that a case of Guilt by Lack of Association.

No bias in THOSE comments - "inexplicably popular" and "notorious" for its conservatism. She's trying to make it sound like the show was popular because it was somehow promoting sex abuse, when - of course - it did no such thing..

Unless someone can show Collins wrote the scripts and directed the programs as well as acted in them, this attempt to smear Christians with Collins behavior is despicable.

LOL. So according to Amanda, the entire Christian conservative agenda is de-legitimized because Christians liked a show that had an actor who, unknown to them, was a pedophile, portray a lead role as a pastor? Can two play at this game?

Bill Maher thinks Islam is an evil force in the world. Does that mean that the liberal side of any issue that is debated on his show is illegitimate?

It used to be said that Hollywood loved morality plays, because they were money makers. But they also had much glee in being immoral people pretending to be moral people. And this pointed out that those who wouldn’t, much less couldn’t do, still pretended to teach.

exactly. and to be honest i thought ptc’s rating of this show was bs. it was not a great christian show. i was never impressed with it, ever. it was secular hollywood trying to do christian, and giving you the osteens. real thin veneer and no substance.

I am so annoyed that they keep mentioning 7th Heaven as the show he was on.....he was on Scandal and The Fosters which are recent and he was going to be in Ted 2 which is not out yet as well as tons of other shows, but what do we hear all day long.....7th Heaven and they are doing it on purpose.

I suppose if Patricia Heaton is ever in trouble they are going to continue saying the actress from “Everybody Loves Raymond” and totally ignore “The Middle”? Well that is what they are essentially doing with Stephen Collins. It is so annoying.

They are just pointing their noses at the conservatives.....yes I know the show wasn’t overly conservatives, but compared to what they have on these days....

If I recall correctly they were pretty “modern” in their beliefs.

The kind of people who would tell gay couples that God loves them just the way they are.

Does this idiot understand that Stephen Collins is AN ACTOR..he portrayed a character on TV!!! That is the problem with liberals, they have their heads so far up their asses that they can’t differentiate the difference between REALITY and FICTION

It was a fairly conservative show for Hollywood standards. And they hated it.

Funny how this moron who wrote this article also didn’t mention that the character “Eric Camden” was also anti gun and pro Muslim
