BTW: Indulgences don’t “come in.” They are given out.

And nobody ever pays a penny for an indulgence.

So what are you talking about?

There is a relic of dry blood which, as the Cardinal Archbishop moves the reliquary, liqufies and visibly flows again.  When it doesn’t… bad things happen, such as earthquakes.

Sleep easy, my friend.

This is quite famous!

I am glad that San Gennaro's blood liquified, Italy's had enough troubles for awhile.

Well, THAT was out of context.

One reader reported that a priest had expressed doubt in the miracle, another reader responded:

So whose blood does he think it is, and how would that make it less miraculous that the blood looks new after centuries? Sheesh, people, if you’re going to be a skeptic, do it right.

More to the point, if one doesn’t have anything edifying to say, and one doesn’t have any proof or in-depth knowledge as an authority or scholar on the question, why would you bring it up and be skeptical in public, as a priest? Do you really have nothing better to do than to fiddle around with people’s beliefs for your own amusement, or are you just taking out your own doubts on other people? I’ve said some things to vulnerable people that I’ve regretted later, but at least I didn’t say it as a representative of Jesus Christ Himself.

- if the shoe fits, wear it.

The real miracle would be if you could look at the people of Naples and see their Christianity spilling out into the world. If God has been showing them something remarkable and encouraging time after time over the centuries, I would hope it had left an impression.

I guess I’m trying to say that where there are miracles, there should follow real conversions of heart. I think my mom noticed a real sense of being among faithful, good, local people when she went to Lourdes.

Is this also true in Naples?

“There is a relic of dry blood which, as the Cardinal Archbishop moves the reliquary, liqufies and visibly flows again.”

Yeesh... if it liquefied on its own in a controlled, pressure, humidity, and temperature invariant environment, while motionless, I might be impressed.

As it is, the bishop is imparting a temperature difference by contact with a warm human body (and friction), and applying a shear force by moving the dried fluid. Both of those actions could cause viscous, dried fluids to re-liquify, with no miracle required.

Today is also the feast day of Our Lady of LaSalette.

Our Lady of La Salette
Date: 19 September 1846
Place: La Salette, France
Visionary: Melanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud

Melanie Calvat and Maximin Giraud were to children from Corps, France, near the town of Grenoble in the southeastern part of France. When Melanie was 14, and Maximin was 11, they were watching cattle in a pasture when they saw a globe of light that “opened” to reveal a most beautiful woman, clad in long dress and apron, with a shawl that crossed in front and tied in back. Around her neck was a Crucifix that depicted the instruments of the Passion, and on her head were a cap and roses. She sat on a rock with her face in her hands weeping....

I haven’t seen that much faith expressed in Italy when I’ve visited - mostly because I haven’t attended too many religious services. But if you watch early Fellini movies - particularly “Nights of Cabiria” you will see some deeply moving expressions of faith in Rome. Of course, that was long ago.

OK, folks...
my response RE: indulgences was directed to the quoted “fiddle around people’s belief’s for your own amusement” statement.

Work backwards from there...
Don’t let me think that y’all are just “knee-jerking” on behalf of your tradition.

And of course, you must remember that it was only a movie. It would be a mistake to judge what Rome's faith is (was) really like, based on Fellini's fantasized account.

I take it you have performed chemical tests to verify the substance in the reliquary is merely dried blood and nothing else?
