Pope Francis has been quoted as saying that reliable data indicates that "about 2%" of clergy in the Catholic Church are paedophiles.
The Pope said that abuse of children was like "leprosy" infecting the Church, according to the Italian La Repubblica newspaper.
He vowed to "confront it with the severity it demands".
But a Vatican spokesman said the quotes in the newspaper did not correspond to Pope Francis's exact words.
The BBC's David Willey in Rome says there is often a studied ambiguity in Pope Francis' off-the-cuff statements.
He wants to show a more compassionate attitude towards Church teaching than his predecessors, but this can sometimes cause consternation among his media advisers, our correspondent adds.
In the interview, Pope Francis was quoted as saying that the 2% estimate came from advisers. It would represent around 8,000 priests out of a global number of about 414,000.
While the incidence of paedophilia as a psychiatric disorder in the general population is not accurately known, some estimates have put it at less than five percent.

Better than having a dumbass problem...
You are correct, howevever the prevalance of pedophilia among homosexuals is greater by at least most of the stats I hear from the pro-gay side claim that 60-70% of child molesters are heterosexual, IOW they are admitting that at least 30% of child sex offenders are drawn from less than 2% of the population. Not sure why but I suspect that they do it because their behaviour is easier to conceal if no adults are involved.
This seems to be a recurring theme with this new Pontiff.
Every time the Pope says something, someone in the Vatican comes back and says the Pope really didn’t say that. Here was what he really meant.
Who exactly is doing the interpreting for this Pope? The same fellow who was doing the sign language at Mandela’s funeral?
You’ll admit that eventually.
The dog ate my last post like a Lerner email. Should have read:
“{....}greater by at least several orders of magnitude. Most of the stats {...}”
Thanks.
there’s really not anyone who would argue 0% isn’t the ideal goal....
The sex abuse scandal provided us with some statistics about this "pedophile" problem. It was/is a predominately male-on-male issue. If we learned nothing else, we learned that much.
These are the same people who will then turn around and accuse the Church of doing nothing substantial about this problem. The very first lesson which must be learned is the identity of the perps; they're men who suffer from same sex attraction disorder. Without an appreciation of this fact, the problem can never be resolved satisfactorily.
Political correctness however, prevents us from clearly enunciating that fact. Once again, the solution to this problem lies with the seminaries and involves the screening out of these individuals prior to ordination. Ironically, this would bring screams of protest from the likes of the BBC and others who shed crocodile tears over this problem.
Every time the Pope says something, someone in the Vatican comes back and says the Pope really didnt say that. Here was what he really meant.”
I think the inaccuracies and false statements are primarily the fault of the media. I have seen times when Pope Francis has issued written statements and the media summary was completely different from the theme of the original text.
The media want to interpret Pope Francis as saying what they believe he should be saying.
Make it O%.
I didn’t take it as a joke. I took it as a quite reasonable demand.
theres really not anyone who would argue 0% isnt the ideal goal....
Yes, but the way it was put made it look like 0% were pedophiles. I misunderstood.
I misunderstood what you were saying. I agree with you.
That may be true.
But I don’t recall them doing this with the Pope’s past two predecessors.
At least not as often.
The so called “pedophile” problem is almost entirely adult homosexuals having sex with boys in their mid to late teens. There is almost no abuse of children.
ahhhh! Okay, I was confused but now am on the same page - cool, FRiend.
Yes, the same page, FRiend.
“But I dont recall them doing this with the Popes past two predecessors.”
Actually they did but it was done differently. Both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict were misquoted and misrepresented often.
They were portrayed as being hard line and rigid and not caring about the church. Pope Benedict was derisively called “God’s Rottweiler” and a NAZI.
Love the way the media called Pope Benedict a Nazi, even though membership in the Hitler Youth was not optional during WWII.
Meanwhile, membership in the Choom gang which BHO belonged was completely optional yet the media never mentions that organization.
The later (from what I read) liked boys also.
