“Was that part a lie?”

It would appear so. The government owned facility was regularly inspected and regularly praised.

It was a headline meant to bring out the anti-Catholic crowd. And it worked. Media doesn’t care about the truth.

I specifically avoided labeling the British and Scottish governments as Protestants because I detest the sort of ad hominem attacks on religions that you are using. I like to believe that the indescribably evil things that were done despite the Christianity of leaders of the Church of England (Anglican), the Church of Scotland (Presbyterian), and the Church of Ireland (Protestant, despite its laughably inaccurate name), not because of it, just as I attribute the malfeasance of Catholic bishops to cowardice in following the advice of secular lawyers and psychiatrists, rather than the ecumenical councils which demand that such evil-doers be defrocked.

And I further would add that the very reason that the Catholic Church is targeted by such lawsuits despite studies showing that such abuse is rampant throughout all institutions in America, including conservative Protestant churches, is precisely because the ecclesiastical structure of the Catholic Church by design makes bishops (> Gr. “overseers”) responsible for those they oversee.

How do the Southern Baptists and other congregationalists handle this problem? The seminaries could withdraw the credentials of the accused. They don’t. The Conference could establish a database of those accused so individual congregations would know not to hire them. They won’t. They know the ministers fired are simply going to find another church to work at, but that won’t be their problem.

You wrote the commentary in your personal comments field, to highlight it. So what if you took it from another source; to try to distance yourself from it now is silly.

“Imagine the irony: the anti-Catholic governments of Britain, Scotland and Ireland (then under the British) commit genocide against the Irish. Eventually, their boot is lifted off the neck of the Irish, but the devastating poverty and social dislocation remain for decades. And then finally, the horrors caused by the British and Scottish are blamed on the religion they sought to destroy!”

Satan is very intelligent. His most common modus operandi seems to be conning good people into thinking that a very bad thing is instead good, then sitting back with a bowl of toasted souls and watching these good people fight for evil.

The following is the longer version of the vital prayer composed by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 after his startling vision as to the future of the Church. This prayer was dedicated for the Feast of St. Michael 1448 years from the date of the election of the first Leo – Pope Saint Leo the Great. Everyone is familiar with the first prayer below which was mandated by His Holiness as part of the Leonine Prayers after Low Mass. The longer version is less well known, but should never be forgotten.

O glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Prince of the heavenly host, be our defense in the terrible warfare which we carry on against principalities and powers, against the rulers of this world of darkness, spirits of evil. Come to the aid of man, whom God created immortal, made in His own image and likeness, and redeemed at a great price from the tyranny of the devil. Fight this day the battle of our Lord, together with the holy angels, as already thou hast fought the leader of the proud angels, Lucifer, and his apostate host, who were powerless to resist thee, nor was there place for them any longer in heaven. That cruel, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil or Satan who seduces the whole world, was cast into the abyss with his angels.

Behold this primeval enemy and slayer of men has taken courage. Transformed into an angel of light, he wanders about with all the multitude of wicked spirits, invading the earth in order to blot out the Name of God and of His Christ, to seize upon, slay, and cast into eternal perdition, souls destined for the crown of eternal glory. That wicked dragon pours out, as a most impure flood, the venom of his malice on men of depraved mind and corrupt heart, the spirit of lying, of impiety, of blasphemy, and the pestilent breath of impurity, and of every vice and iniquity. These most crafty enemies have filled and inebriated with gall and bitterness the Church, the spouse of the Immaculate Lamb, and have laid impious hands on Her most sacred possessions.

In the Holy Place itself, where has been set up the See of the most holy Peter and the Chair of Truth for the light of the world, they have raised the throne of their abominable impiety with the iniquitous design that when the Pastor has been struck the sheep may be scattered.

Arise then, O invincible Prince, bring help against the attacks of the lost spirits to the people of God, and give them the victory. They venerate thee as their protector and patron; in thee holy Church glories as her defense against the malicious powers of hell; to thee has God entrusted the souls of men to be established in heavenly beatitude.

Oh, pray to the God of peace that He may put Satan under our feet, so far conquered that he may no longer be able to hold men in captivity and harm the Church. Offer our prayers in the sight of the Most High, so that they may quickly conciliate the mercies of the Lord; and beating down the dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, do thou again make him captive in the abyss, that he may no longer seduce the nations. Amen.

V: Behold the Cross of the Lord; be scattered ye hostile powers.

R: The Lion of the Tribe of Juda has conquered the root of David.

V: Let Thy mercies be upon us, O Lord.

R: As we have hoped in Thee.

V: O Lord hear my prayer.

R: And let my cry come unto Thee.

V: Let us pray. O God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, we call upon Thy holy Name, and as suppliants, we implore Thy clemency, that by the intercession of Mary, ever Virgin, immaculate and our Mother, and of the glorious Archangel Saint Michael, Thou wouldst deign to help us against Satan and all other unclean spirits, who wander about the world for the injury of the human race and the ruin of our souls. Amen.

It didn't stop others who stated:

And then finally, the horrors caused by the British and Scottish are blamed on the religion they sought to destroy!

I doubt the opinion is only that of the polemical poster. The malice expressed towards everyone and anyone who didn't drop lock-step in defense of the Catholic church was sudden and vindictive. If someone can be accused of thinking the worst, so can those who only think the BEST, in spite of other clues beyond the existence of a septic tank vs. crypt being used for body disposal. When these innocent children were starving to death, raggedly dressed, malnourished and scorned by society, were the bishops suffering as well? Was the Vatican doing everything within its power to ensured those entrusted to their care were taken care of? Did the Pope miss a meal in solidarity???

Tell me, in this assertion of a superior structure within the Catholic church compared to more locally governed non-Catholic ones, has it prevented the scandals that ARE proved to have happened? Does the Catholic church have such an unblemished and sterling reputation that the very thought they might have allowed such things to happen is unthinkable? Do Catholics genuinely wonder why the "world" accepts these kinds of reports so readily? Sure, some of it might be their general hatred of all things relating to God, Christianity, in particular, but it's more than a bit myopic to ascribe it ALL to that.

“Did the Pope miss a meal in solidarity?”

What makes you think he didn’t? Popes pray and fast.

BTW, “solidarity” is a leftard buzzword. Its use is quite suspicious.

Actually, that other poster was ALSO me. And you’ll notice I made no reference whatsoever to the religion of the genocidal terrorists attempting to stomp out the Irish people.

>> The malice expressed towards everyone and anyone who didn’t drop lock-step in defense of the Catholic church was sudden and vindictive. <<

Oh, please. The only people who were criticized were the ones who immediately used the article to bash the Catholic church, immediately dropping their suspicion of the left-wing Christian-bashing Washington Post the moment the target was Catholicism.

>> When these innocent children were starving to death, raggedly dressed, malnourished and scorned by society, were the bishops suffering as well? Was the Vatican doing everything within its power to ensured those entrusted to their care were taken care of? Did the Pope miss a meal in solidarity??? <<

Actually, yes. Pretty much all Catholics fasted as a means of atoning for the suffering of those less fortunate. But the issue by the 1940s wasn’t so much starving to death as diseases made common by poor living conditions. Again, though: see how you shift the focus away from the fantastic evil of those who caused the suffering, who happened to be Protestants, and put it back on the Catholics.

And while it’s fruitless to blame a religion itself for misdeeds, the horrors of Ireland weren’t merely caused by secular leaders: During the Irish genocide, North Ireland, Scotland, and the UK were filled with Protestant preachers holding up the suffering of Catholics in Ireland as an example of God’s wrath against the “totally depraved” sinners who reject God’s grace.

And in America, during these later horrors, Protestant denominations across America were dropping their opposition to birth control, as Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood were preaching the diabolical gospel of controlling Catholics’ population.

Protestantism has the ability to dodge responsibility and change doctrines at a whim, so if a Protestant says, “I reject the attempted genocide by the British, Scottish and Irish governments” or “I reject the paranoid hysteria that led to the KKK lynching Catholic immigrants fleeing the Irish potato famine” (who were a much more frequent target than blacks), there’s pretty much no rebuttal. I simply have to be glad they’ve learned a lesson, even if it’s the Catholics who paid the cost.

But the irony is that while the failures of the Catholic Church leaders to protect children from monsters stemmed from substituting Catholic doctrine with worldly solutions, the KKK, the Irish genocide, etc., all stemmed directly from Protestant preachers CLAIMING to be teaching Protestant doctrine.

“Does the Catholic church have such an unblemished and sterling reputation that the very thought they might have allowed such things to happen is unthinkable?”

Subtract out the propaganda war, and yes, the Church pretty much does have a great reputation. No organization has founded and operated as many hospitals or schools. No organization has fed and clothed so many of the poor. Not even close.

“Do Catholics genuinely wonder why the “world” accepts these kinds of reports so readily?”

More Catholics accept the reports themselves than are able to see through the fog of deception that Satan generates.

“Sure, some of it might be their general hatred of all things relating to God, Christianity, in particular, but it’s more than a bit myopic to ascribe it ALL to that.”

Nobody does. Catholics deeply regret the things that actually happened, but the fact that some things actually happened is not license to accuse the Church of all kinds of things that didn’t happen, or didn’t happen the way the enemies of the Church assert.

As Pope Paul said, the smoke of Satan has entered the sacristy. The use of the word by fallible men who temporarily occupy positions within the Church doesn’t change a thing.

One must also reflect that the word “solidarity” is a translation of whatever word the Holy Father actually used. I haven’t gotten around to checking whether it’s a good translation or not.

“Solidarity,” although an ancient Catholic concept, became a buzzword in Catholic circles during the anti-communist revolutions of Eastern Europe. It was used to embarrass the communist governments which claimed to represent the proletariat, but were simply elitist and out-of-touch. It was seized upon, however, by the socialist Left in to oppose the supposedly growing divide between rich and poor in capitalist nations.

In truth, the principle of Solidarity is inseparable from the principle of Subsidiarity, which demands power be devolved to the simplest level of organization (nation to state, state to town, town to family); a federal bureaucrat cannot have solidarity with subjects in a village 1,000 miles away.

The Holy Father’s word was “solidarity.” In 1980s Poland, the signs and banners were unmistakable: “Solidarnosc.” It’s the concept, not the word, that was translated intolerably poorly by the Left in America.

Solidarity is the empathic unity of people working together for a common goal; it’s teamwork at a spiritual level. What the left doesn’t understand about solidarity is that it is incompatible with bureaucracy or compulsion: they may decry that the wealthy may lack solidarity with the poor, but neither redistributive taxation, nor regulatory entanglement create solidarity; in fact, they increase antagonism. And therein was the irony: Solidarity was used as a slogan by anti-communists precisely because socialism cannot have solidarity.

I have no problem with the concept as you state it; my problem is that the left made the word their own—at least in the part of the world of which I was cognizant.
