I’d even suggest that the gift of tongues could be generalized to (and connected with) a gift of good communication. Speaking in those foreign tongues would be only one way to do that, though it’s a startling witness to unbelievers in the right context (where you have people of multiple linguistic backgrounds present). Maybe it’s rare today not because of being utterly obsolete, but because the circumstances that made it important rarely happen now. God isn’t the kind to do something just to be a show for its own sake; He does things that have meanings. Anyhow that’s my $0.02 on charismatics, and I wish all genuine Holy Ghost power to them in every single circumstance.
