A CATHOLIC priest ran a cult-like group sexually abusing young girls giving them all the surname Brown, as in Charlie Brown from the Peanuts comic strip, the royal commission has been told.

Her voice wavering, one member of the group, Joan Isaacs, said Father Francis Derriman told her he was dying and had to have sex with her first.

He fathered a child with another girl in the group when she was 17.

This is your second article in the last few minutes about abusing priests. Happen to find any Protestant, Jewish or Muslim abusers out there, or are you just stuck on Catholic priests?

Anyime you have adults in some position of authority over kids who hold them in some sort of reverance based on guilt and fear, bad things can happen.

Good point. My guess is that these degenerates that do these things only join the church to carry out their fantasies, and never were the least bit serious about the faith. Same with the Scouts and kids sport teams.

Pedophilia occurs among priests at the same rate as in the general population.

Why don't you post a few articles about non-priest pedophiles?

Just to be fair and balanced.

As a practicing Catholic, I honestly think the Catholic Church should review its policy of having an all-male celibate priesthood. There is nothing in the Bible-—either the Old Testament or the New Testament-—which mandates an all male celibate priesthood. There is nothing in the early Church history which required celibacy as a precondition for the serving in the clergy. In fact the first 40 popes at least were married men. Up until the 12th Century, the overwhelming majority of priests and bishops were married men. The institution of celibacy was put into place in the Middle Ages largely to combat rampant corruption and nepotism in the Church. I think the policy should be reviewed. Not claiming that celibacy caused this particular scandal. However a married man with a wife and children is no less holy or no less qualified to serve as a priest than a single man supposedly committed to living a life of celibacy.

There is also nothing about a celibate priesthood that encourages child molestation or homosexuality

Pedophilia occurs among priests at the same rate as in the general population.

But shouldn’t it occur less frequently among priests? Aren’t they supposed to be on a higher moral plane than the general population?

Actually is occurs the least with priests.

In order:
Relatives — someone who knows the child
Teachers
Coaches
Protestant Ministers

Then Priests are way down on the list.

So if a father or an uncle teaches history at the local middle school, coaches the girl’s basketball team and is the youth minister at his protestant or non-Catholic Church —— WATCH OUT!

Actually the bible lays out in Timothy and Titus that the leaders of the chuch should be married men. So priests really aren’t commanded to be celibate (unless they are unmarried as we are ALL commanded to be celibate if unmarried) but they should be married (must be married to be a bishop) and then MUST be men.

(Of course I use the biblical definition of married. One man joined with one woman for life)
