The historical detail in the Bible is literally the bridge to link the various otherwise scantily connected but generally much stronger neighboring and overlapping ethnic powers, such as Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Elam, and others.

Where some people get tripped up is trying to link Ramses II with the Exodus while trumpeting that the Bible has been proven right; the entire 2nd Intermediate Period and 18th Dynasty lies between the Exodus and Ramses II, as verified in the pretty recent radiocarbon dating of Ramses' remains found in his canopic jars. Accepting the "Ramses II was the Pharaoh of the Exodus" nonsense is guaranteed to (and IMHO designed to) completely demolish the historical narrative in the Old Testament.

Thanks for the ping. I wouldn’t consider Velikovsky to be an authority in this area of inquiry. Someone like FF Bruce or Robinson would be real authorities.
