A Brazilian reader notes two incidents from WYD (pope visits Pentecostal Church)
Catholic and Enjoying it ^ | April 7, 2013 | Mark Shea

He writes:

- A Pentecostal church in the favela is located in front of the place the Pope spoke to the people. This church lead a vigil the whole night before the visit making a lot of noise and pestering the neighbours as a form of protest and resistance against the Pope’s presence in the community. When the Pope arrived, he saw the church and said “let’s go there to salute them”. He went to the church, praised the pastors, prayed a Our Father together with them saying that we all who follow Christ are His children. The church then opened its building offering water, the bathrooms and shelter for those who were attending the Pope meeting.

- In Campina Grande, in the day of the final Mass, a pentecosal couple entered a Catholic church asking to baptise their children and themselves into the Catholic faith. The astonished priest asked “why?”. The answer from the couple were two words: “Pope Francis”.

As a Brazilian, I say that I expect more to come….

I love this guy.

A BTTT story! May there, indeed, be many conversions.

“A BTTT story! May there, indeed, be many conversions.”

If “all who follow Christ are children of God” then why would you desire conversions from other Christian sects? There are plenty of nominal Catholics in latin America that need to make their faith real and not merely tradition. Aside from them, plenty of lost people to be ministered to by all Christian churches.

A better translation of what he said is”let us go in and greet them.” The verb “saludar” in Spanish means “to greet”.

It is a sign that the Christians are realizing what John 17 is really all about, that ALL the believers be ONE.

My evangelical protestant church has several recently converted Catholic families. Should I go ahead and call it a movement of the Spirit?

IMO, it is always dangerous to idolize any man, regardless of his status or station. Other than that Pope Francis is a nice man.

With growing despising of Christians in America coming day by day, in time, it will take these very attacks to bring them together in America and elsewehere.

“The astonished priest asked “why?”

Seems like those Pentecostals knew more about the Catholic faith than that priest. The Catholic Church does not consider all Pentecostal baptisms to be valid.

I hope not. Who wants a Christianity united under self-righteousness and a denial of Christ’s work on the cross?

Our battle isn’t with infidels over good morality or things like that, or even titles, as surely every hypocrite in the world thinks they are highly moral, and many of them claim to be Christians. Their battle is with Christ, who did die and rise again for our sins, because are all indeed depraved, and can in no way merit heaven by our own deeds.

Therefore, such unity is not only worthless, but repulsive.

A “good morality” is the “fruits” of faith, and an unbeliever who does good, does so by the grace of God if he does so because he wishes to do good and avoid evil.

I was raised Catholic (Catholic grade & high school) but I now am a Christian and go to an Evangelical Free church. It’s conservative and teaches the word of God.

I really think highly of Pope Francis because he is tearing down the wall of separation between Christians; Catholic and Protestant. One of the things that drew me away from the Catholic Church was hearing that only Catholics are going to heaven. The bible teaches it’s not your denomination, but believing and accepting God’s gift of salvation; and when we trust God with our lives we walk in His ways and not the ways of the world we are in God’s will.

I think, Pope Francis is humble and walks with God. He is not just a figure head that other pope’s have been. He is not concerned about politics, but what God thinks. Jesus told us to love one another and spoke of a house divided will fall. Maybe we will see a revival, not from protestants, not from catholics, but in all God’s children.
