Pope Francis and Gays: “Loving the Sinner” Is Still Intolerance (Thanks for clarifying that, Time)
Time ^ | July 30, 2013 | Tim Padgett

Posted on 07/30/2013 11:25:09 AM PDT by Mrs. Don-o

It's hardly surprising that the world, especially Roman Catholics like myself, is breathlessly decoding what Pope Francis told reporters on his flight back to Rome from Brazil on Monday regarding homosexuality: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has good will, who am I to judge?”

The Pope’s remarks... hardly represent a break with Catholic church doctrine, which still condemns homosexuality. The Vatican’s catechismal stance regarding the LGBTs in our midst remains the same: The church may love the sinner, but it hates the sin. And since Francis was referring specifically to gay priests—who like other Catholic clerics take a vow of celibacy and so don’t commit the “sin”— His Holiness wasn’t exactly going out on a theological limb.

But at a time when the world is increasingly accepting gay rights and even gay marriage, here ‘s what’s really significant about the Pope’s statement: The love-the-sinner-but-hate-the-sin trope no longer carries much if any moral credibility.

How—given our awareness today that homosexuality is as biological as heterosexuality, and that homosexual relationships have proven as valid and socially enriching as straight ones— can we take any religious leader seriously when he claims to love gay people but at the same time demonizes the consummation of their love for each other?

How, for example, can the Catholic church declare homosexuals “disordered” and their lifestyle an “intrinsic moral evil,” yet expect us to applaud its “love” for gays somewhere beneath all that homophobic bigotry?

My mother was born in Mississippi and has often told me of Southern whites in the mid-20th century insisting they could love a black person even if they hated the black race. No, you can’t .... When he was Archbishop of Buenos Aires he called Argentina’s legalization of gay marriage a “grave anthropological regression.”

Thanks for clarifying that, Time Magazine.

I mean, the article is full of errors, but it makes its main point: the Catholic Church teaches that homosexual sex is an "intrinsic moral evil," and is opposed to it, under any conditions, for anybody.

Now and forever, Amen.

Gay marriage has been primarily about forcing people to APPROVE of homosexual acts, and secondarily about healthcare benefits.

Time-Lies-Warner-Turner Media has insisted God has been dead since the 1960s. Pretty intolerant of them.

There's a bit of a biological, social and spiritual difference between, "I love you, let's do something ordered towards making a baby" and "I love you, let's do something ordered toward [. . .]"

RE: : “Loving the Sinner” Is Still Intolerance

Well, at least TIME is open about their agenda -— JUST ACCEPT THE SIN and CELEBRATE IT.

But then, if you accept the sin, what the heck is there to tolerate?

You only tolerate something you disagree with...

Which in essence means the word “tolerate” has lost its meaning.

I happen to think that homosexuality is 80% physiological, but so what? Just because a tendency may originate in biology doesn't mean it is moral to act out that tendency. I think orthodox Christians may have differing opinions about why people are homosexual; what said Christians should agree on is that sex is for marriage and that marriage means a man and a woman.

P.S. Not disagreeing with you — just neutralizing the Time writer's argument.

Suck a joke of an article from a naive closet homo.

“given our awareness today that homosexuality is as biological as heterosexuality, and that homosexual relationships have proven as valid and socially enriching as straight ones”

As biological, even though it has been proven to not be genetic, and is a biological dead end?

As valid, even though it serves zero purpose?

As socially enriching, even though it has correlation with several mental disorders, ends one’s genetic line, increases the chances of contracting potentially lethal diseases, and is pretty much rejected by over 85% of the world as disgusting?

Yeah, great article, doofus.

It’s a Christian, thing, Time - you wouldn’t understand.

I think at the time of publication, the general idea may have been that the Beatles replaced him (”Eighty million screaming teen girls can’t be wrong”). In under five years, they disbanded, at the hands of Yoko Ono? Is she God? Or maybe she’s the devil. By her fruits you shall know her.

At the end of their days, a lot of people are going to be shocked to learn there is a God, He does have standards and His Son offered each of us an amazing salvation for the willing.

I stopped reading there ... then read again to the end of the paragraph .. and stopped .....period.

I have a pretty good imagination and honest ... at a great risk (by this confession here in FR), I confess I've attempted to imagine me with another man .. and by GOD ... that's some sick stuff.

The Bible condemns men with men .. AND women with women .. in more places than one, both Old and New Testament

It ain't supposed to be ... period.

The devils trying to degenerate the planet will be quite surprised when they find out that God is intolerant ... maybe that’s what fuels their anarchy and treachery!

Loving the sinner is tolerance, what it isn’t is acceptance.

Oh yeah? Well, that's just because of "homophobia".

Oddly enough, miscegenation, which was in some ways more harshly looked down upon in some quarters, never caused any of those problems, regardless of social antipathy against it.
