Erie Catholic Bishop Lawrence Persico said that Saint Vincent Health System can no longer be considered a Catholic hospital after its merger with Highmark Inc.
However, the bishop did say that Catholics could still use services provided by Saint Vincent.
In a statement released Sunday, Persico also thanked the Sisters of St. Joseph of Northwestern Pennsylvania for their 138 years of health-care ministry. The sisters founded the hospital in 1875 and will no longer be its sponsor after the merger, which was expected to take place early this month.
"With this change in ownership, there is no longer any guarantee that all aspects of the 'Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Services,' published by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, will be followed as they have been in the past," Persico said.
He was out of town Sunday and not available for comment beyond the six-paragraph statement sent by the Catholic Diocese of Erie, a spokeswoman said.
In the statement, Persico said, "The directives state that Catholic institutions and hospitals may not promote or condone contraceptive practices or direct sterilization of men or women. We do not have a guarantee that these procedures will not be condoned or performed.

Unless they've "gone modern", it's the sisters of St Joseph that LOOK like nuns.
(Someday I'll tell the story of sister eclair .. )
Let the killings (abortion), maimings (vasectomy, “sex changes”) and vivisections (organ transplants) begin.
Sorry to inform you...
The sisters of St. Joseph taught me in elementary school at St. Theresa’s in Coral Gables back in the late 40’s and 50’s. They were a mix of sternness and compassion and were darned scary to a little boy with those black habits which they wore at ALL times even outdoors in the blazing Florida sun.
The second from the right on top row looks like my 4th grade teacher.
And they chucked the habits because ...... ?

Thank God for the Bishops permission. <sarcasm>
So he signaled that it was OK, without dragging in unnecessary controversy.
It sounds to me more like a sale than a merger. Apparently the SSJ's are out altogether. Again, sad.
Because it was fashionable to do so in the 1970s ... and they bought in to the satanic lie that by ditching their distinctive garb, their uniform, they would be seen as "relevant" by the world, and their "message" (whatever it may be) would be more easily accepted.
Instead, they signed their organizational death warrant.
Uniforms matter.
It's not a difficult concept ... lots of folks understand it.
Because — they thought the would concentrate on themselves rather than on Jesus.
Indeed. Out little church school was run by three nuns from up North. In the early 60s, the sister superior confided in me that her order was thinking about discarding their habits, but that if they did, she would leave. Habits creates an esprit dcorps by subordinating physical appearances, One troop in a platoon looks more or less like another until you get up close. Habits also women from immodest glances if they happen to be pretty or regarded with disdain if they are homely. Even homely women tend to look better if one sees only their faces.
